Time and time again. I say eliminate AMHA, and all government housing. The government should have NO business building housing for the 'poor'. I studied the 'start' of many infamous housing projects. They got the poor living in run down homes out (homes they owned), and into the projects with the promise of good fine living. In actuality, many of the initial residents were moved out of desirable areas for development. Instead, the government should provide for low-interest loans or grants to fix up homes owned by the poor. The grouping of many low-income people that make poor choices has been a COMPLETE failure. We started with mom and dad in the home. Now, we have mom only and she is in poverty raising kids with no direction. We require her to work, require little from Dad, and let the government care for the kids. Government subsidized housing has robbed families of personal responsibility. Assistance should be temporary, two years. That's it for a voucher. Look at the AMHA website. Once you go 'over-income' you can apply to STILL live in the projects under a program to have wage earners as 'role models' in developments. Places like the Waterford and Eastland Woods are great examples of over-income people paying AMHA $350 a month rent to live in a nice apt or house. Repaired and remodeled for free.

ABJ posted an article about an incident in Akron ONLY AFTER it was ran everywhere else, 10 days after the incident and now will not let there be public commentary on it. If I remember correctly, Fireworks were held in Firestone Park and teens attached alot of persons who were walking home etc; this was posted by another reader making comments because the incident happened somewhere b4 the 4th of July and ABJ had not ran one story bout it at all until now!

The family in the story were not the only ones attacked the Beacon just did not say it happened for some unk reason; this may have been why the number of APD was increased on the 4th downtown fireworks and why this story was kept quite?

I used to live on Thurmont back in the 70's when it was an upscale neighborhood. What the hail happened over there? Why is it a ghetto now? Why do these people rundown every place they move into?

If I lived in that part of Akron I would be doing whatever I could to see that fireworks are cancelled next year. The story was kept quiet because they wanted a good turnout downtown for the 4th and the rib fest. None of this suprises me. None of it.

Don't forget that little clause in the Ohio Revised code about carrying where liquor is sold for on site consumption. Lock 3, the rib fest, italian fest and all other downtown activities that serve liquor make it illegal to carry your firearm, even though you have a permit. There is a bill going through the Arizona state legislature right now that addresses this, although it requires that the person who is carrying can't consume any alcohol.

I don't know what the answer is other than we need to look out for each other and work together if we are ever going to see any real change.

for me, the most distrubring thought about the mob attack is that the LOCAL paper didn't run the story in what many (myself included) felt was a timely manner. I get all of my local news from the ABJ and live only a few blocks from where the incident occured. The people who are saying was a politial or quasi political move are probably correct, and that is frightening.

If the ABJ can post within hours about robberies, traffic fatalities, and other incidents of that sort, why not feel it is important to let people know about a MOB attack? It is far more important to me to know that there is a large group of youths running around my neighborhood with the intent of beating up seeminly innocent people than to know about someone racing down 77 on a motorcycle.

I am sure there would/will be racist remarks posted if/when they open the comment section on the overdue story. At the same time, there seem to be racist remarks from both sides on practically any article where race is mentioned anyway. Oh well, as ignorant as it is to make such comments, we are permitted the freedom to say what we feel in this country.

You can't report all news fairly without ruffling a few feathers. The ABJ is looking for a ruffle-free loophole. So they publish some stuff, avoid other stuff, and try to keep a lid on the consequences of their decisions.

If I could move out of here, I would. I have a small child who loves to be outside at the local school playground. I've heard rumors from our neighbors (a couple policemen live nearby) that a man in a green truck is driving around trying to kidnap children. So now I can't let my child out to play without worrying like crazy. And if that isn't bad enough, now we have this mini-race war on the verge of boiling over.

I'm tired of the violence. I'm tired of the crime. I know crime is part of human existence (my mother always warned me, no matter how nice a situation is, there will always be some idiot who isn't happy until it's all screwd up) but I don't have to like it.

People DO need to begin sticking together-- regardless of race. Not every poor black person or white person is a criminal. Not every young black male is a thug. People who value hard work and amicable coexistence need to watch out for each other and stand together. We can't rely on the local government or even the police department. We need to take care of our friends and neighbors and stand up to thugs who would terrorize us. We need to take our neighborhoods back.

On to more important matters... the level of fear brought on by the continual reports of violent crimes in Akron grows by the day. Black, whites, citizens or immigrants, who cares honestly? People are beating, robbing, killing, and perpertrating crimes against one another at (what appears to be) an increasing and alarming rate. We can blame whomever or whatever we would like, bad parenting, the economy, the mayor, lack of education and on and on and on. But that won't solve anything.

I have no cure all, no grand plan to save the residents of the city from one another, but goodness gracious, shouldn't someone be working on one? taking input from citizens? and getting out from behind their desk to FIX the problem? Violence typically begets more violence, the same with ignorance and racism, but ignoring or failing to address the problems is not going to do anything.

I realize that statement will prompt people to say the way to fix the problems is to arm citizens, to lock up all the 'thugs,' have target practice and on and on. But see above, violence only begets more violence. If to solve the problems, we stoop to the level of the people creating/adding to the problem then we are essentially no better than they are.

Someone on another story blog had the idea to send the story to different news sites and such. The story of the thugs attacking the family made it to the Drudge Report, American Daily dot com as well as a few others. Maybe morris Dees and the Southern Poverty Law Center will investigate this hate crime, or maybe they only investigate hate crimes going the other way.

Time for a peaceful, legal open carry march in Firestone park.

Those who defended Emperor Don in the recall election can view the Firestone Park attacks as a microcosm of how far the once beautiful neighborhoods like Firestone Park have fallen under the Emperor's watch (since 1987). Let's take a closer look at neighborhoods that were once the envy of the current day suburbs that surround Akron (where everyone now lives).

Firestone Park -- Still salvageable but heading downhill fast.

North Hill -- Compton of the Midwest. Period.

Kenmore Area -- Terrible area and getting worse.

South Akron -- Has always been bad, but today it's a walking-talking crime stat.

Northwest Akron -- Where does one begin to describe this area? Don't venture to it day or night.

East Akron -- Depends specifically which section of East Akron we're talking about, but mostly a bad area.

So where exactly is that "downtown-development-money" spiraling off too? Is it crossing the All-American Bridge into North Hill? Uh, no. Is it ferrying it's way down East Market? Nope.

Take a peek into the Akron Public Schools. The majority of special education kids in Kindergarten to 3rd grade are there due to BEHAVIOR. We lived near Eastland Woods. (just off the Tallmadge Circle, on the Akron border) (once nice homes, now all subsidized or reduced rent) You would see 5 yr olds out running the streets during the day. Why? they were on suspension !! Five years old! hitting teachers, hitting kids, throwing chairs, whatever. Parents (usually a single mom) don't care, they gave up controlling their child long ago.

I taught at Reidinger this year (one of the schools being closed - shocker there!), and I had a student come in about ten minutes late, see me (a sub), drop the F bomb and walk out. About ten minutes later, he came back in, demanded I let him "participate" and then decided he didn't like the assignment. Started cussing me out. When I wrote him up, he threw a huge tantrum. Another teacher came in and informed me he was one of their "conduct disorder students" and took the write up paper work and disposed of it.

Makes you wonder what that taught him, doesn't it?

There are many stories not told Jimbo. Like the story of my friend's 15 yr old son that was beaten and left in the street having seizures this past spring. He was beaten over a pair of plain black sneakers that he probable would've just given to them had they asked. He now has damage to his eyes, but no one did a story on this. The police weren't even much help. It's sad because this child never felt the need to deal with a lot of kids. He kept to himelf and the one day he decides to go visit a friend...this happens. This was a group attack against one kid and no one cared.

After all this attention, I'm wondering when is the ABJ is planning to do a follow-up story on the APD's "investigation" into this hate crime? The APD IS solving this crime, aren't they? After all, that's what police do... investigate after the fact rather than prevent or stop such crimes, right? I can't wait for the final report!

I care less about the fact that the APD is not investigating this as a hate crime than the concept that teh ABJ waited 10 DAYS to inform people of what happened. The incident did not occur over the 4th of July, it occured during the FS Park neighborhood celebration 6/27. Now there is no update to the story that I am aware of.

I think many will agree the actions fit the definition of a hate crime ( from www.dictionary.com a crime, usually violent, motivated by prejudice or intolerance toward a member of a gender, racial, religious, or social group), but all that does is enhance the punishment for the initial incident.

I wonder if since the story says that perps were ' teens' if that has anything to do with the ability to label this a hate crime (assuming they are under the age of majority). If the people are involved are being charged as minors (assuming they are caught, indicted and it moves towards prosecution) does that influence the ability to add the hate crime enhancement to the charges?

We've become a nation afraid to speak the truth. All violent crimes are hateful and malicious. I have many good black friends who would smack these kids silly. What has to happen now is for all the good people of this city to band together to fight against anything and everything evil. When we all come together and do this Akron will be a better place. pray for your neighbor it will make all the difference.

What does this article have to do with the teen mobbing investigation ? Wow I can't believe that people believe everything that is printed ? If you read the article it say they are still investigating .. for a reason.
