Fire chief won't cut budget, gets fired

By Associated Press

SHAKER HEIGHTS: The fire chief in an upscale Cleveland suburb has been dismissed for refusing the mayor's demand to cut his budget to help trim a city deficit.

Shaker Heights Fire Chief Donald Barnes plans to contest Monday's dismissal by Mayor Earl Leiken. The mayor had asked the chief to cut $250,000 from the fire department's $8.3 million budget as city departments trim costs to avoid a citywide deficit of $3.5 million.

Shaker Heights made budget cuts earlier this year, but the mayor says declining tax collections forced a new round of cuts. Starting this month, some Shaker Heights city employees will take every other Friday as unpaid days off.

@ honest girl:

a "white" family along with friends were jumped and beaten by a gang of young "black" thugs. The ABJ will not allow any comments to be posted concerning that article. WHY?
Right is right . . . call it for what it is, a hate crime against this white family.
Each of these wanna be "gangstas" should face justice for their cowardly actions.

The chief has a moral and legal obligation to protect the lives and property of Shaker Heights. Perhaps the mayor should see what cuts he could've made prior to firing him.

Brian,

We're talking about a 3% cut here. No branch of the government, at any level, gets a blank check.

Too bad. The Fire Chief serves at the pleasure of the mayor.

But we have to give him credit for stickin' to his guns and sayin' no. He obviously had the city's best interests at heart.

I wonder how many DUI's he had?? Akron's has 3.
