Robber pleads guilty to beating man, taking $2

By Beacon Journal staff

AKRON: A 19-year-old Akron man pleaded guilty Thursday to beating and robbing a man of $2 in quarters.

Police said Eric Campbell, 19, of Frederick Avenue, attacked a man at Howard and York streets on April 27.

Campbell and three other men began following the victim, who was walking home from work. When he tried to ignore them, he was struck in the head from behind and collapsed to the ground.

Police canvassed the area and found the group of suspects a short time later, reports said. The man identified Campbell as the man who attacked him and stole eight quarters from his pocket.

The victim was treated for a broken jaw at St. Thomas Hospital and required follow-up reconstructive surgery at Akron City Hospital.

Campbell pleaded guilty to robbery and felonious assault, both second-degree felonies punishable by up to eight years in prison on each charge.

At the time of the crime, Campbell was on probation for a robbery he committed in 2008, according to Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh.

Campbell is scheduled for sentencing Aug. 20 by Judge Brenda Burnham Unruh.

Maybe Mrs. Walsh has unfounded job security issues. Maybe she believes that putting violent offenders back on the streets will lead them back into her court room.. Hey Mrs. Walsh; how many of the people who have come through your courtroom only to be slapped on the wrist and set free only long enough to commit another violent crime. This is a joke. Its laughable how lenient our court system is on repeat offenders. It makes me want to wretch to read about these sickos getting probation for violent crimes, and then going out and commiting another violent crime before they are even off probation.

I would love to see the Sheriffs in Ohio grow a set and actually punish the prisoners that are assigned to their jails. We have too many jail administrators out there who can't think outside the box. A perfect example is Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Maricopa County, Arizona (look him up if you don't know who he is). The jail programs there are true punishment. Chain gangs, work details... punish and teach criminals at the same time by making them do REAL work, something they obviously know nothing about - something drastic needs to change because criminals are coming out of jail and going right back to being criminals.

let me start off by saying im not siding with the perks in any way at ALL... but the fact that they only robbed him of $2 is irrevelant... im sure they didn't know when they were robbing him that they would only get two dollars. Also, whose to say the victim didn't get robbed of something he wouldn't like to report to the police.. happens all the time... I'm just sayin...

You complain about the mayor..but what do you propose he do? Any good ideas? Sure he cut law enforcement but it was the last thing he cut and unfortunately Akron like most U.S cities is doing this to help with budgets. How about people with no sense of good or respect for human life stop beating and robbing others? It's the society and culture that they grew up in that needs a desperate makeover.

I agree with CLH but the problem with that is they would sue the County for cruel and unusual punishment because they never worked a day in there worthless lives

This is one of the many reasons why I moved from Akron. Years ago I was 7 months pregnant with my son and a car full of people came flying off the expressway ramp and almost hit my car, which had my 4 year old daughter in it also. I had the right of way, as they had a stop sign and I was on the overpass. After the startling event, I pulled up to the light, thankful we'd not been hit and the next thing one of those people from the car came up to my window and punched me in the face! I had the make, model, license number of the vehicle and had seen this car (turqoise caddy, black roof, hard to miss) parked at a residence. When I made a report with all the information yet, I never got a call back or anything in regards to this. Now the really "hilarious" part of this story is, I went to high school with the officer taking the report AND I had several family members who were on the APD. Nothing ever came of this! I did start carrying a weapon for self-defense though. This was not going to happen to me again if I could help it. Unfortunately, I felt I would have to take the law into my own hands. But, I believe you would call that "Self-defense". To bad the gentleman had to learn the hard way to look out for yourself. I want to know who's going to pay his hospital bills? The Judge who let these people off in the first place! HA! Right.

Daddysgirl: get your head out of your a**

Akronitenolonger: You left something out of your story. Like when you pulled up to the light, you must have said some nasty stuff.

Yeah, no doubt she forgot you can't say anything to "some" people. They have their rights ya know.

NURSE: You need to start your program with the white women, because they lead the race in collecting welfare benefits.

You're right. Their are more whites on welfare than black. But, we're talking percentages. (13% nationwide) You know ratios? Opps, my bad. That's seventh grade math. Well, some things can't be explained to some people. Don't worry though, when "Change" is implemented completely we'll be required to hand it over. No need for a beating.
