Assistant city prosecutor to fill seat on Akron court

By Stephanie Warsmith
Beacon Journal staff writer

Assistant Akron Prosecutor Jerry Larson has been appointed to fill the Akron Municipal Court opening created by the death of Judge Linda Kersker.

Larson, who has been rumored for several days to be Gov. Ted Strickland's pick for the vacancy, was notified today by Strickland's office .

''Obviously, I am very excited about this,'' said Larson, who has been with the city prosecutor's office for 20 years.

Larson expects to begin his judgeship Aug. 10.

Larson said he wanted to extend his appreciation to Strickland and his condolences to Kersker's family.

''I look forward to using my knowledge and training to build on the sound legal foundation Kersker was able to establish during her brief time in Akron Municipal Court,'' he said.

Kersker, a longtime Akron school board member and attorney, was appointed judge in February. She died July 2 of a heart problem.

Larson is a Democrat. The elections of municipal judges are nonpartisan. The job pays about $114,000 a year.

The Akron court district includes Akron, Fairlawn, Bath, Richfield and Springfield townships; and Lakemore and Richfield villages.

I don't know this fella, but I wish him good luck.

The good news is that the law department can now contribute the reduction in their deprtment to the city's alleged financial owes, by not refillin' the post.

@Betamax: I don't think the law department can afford not to replace him given all of the record requests the Mendenhall camp has buried them in over the past few months.

I'm very cynical about this, but how can a former prosecutor be unbiased? Won't he be judging cases involving friends and former colleagues? - especially with the over eagerness of Sherry Bevan Walsh keeping people locked up after evidence proves them innocent. This is not a personal comment about the man, just a logical question that would apply to any selection of a prosecutor.

That's the appeals court is there. It is there to remove the bias of any judge that sits below them. Congratulations Jerry!

majykman775 - I don't find that very comforting. I'd rather remove the bias before an appeals court has to make a decision. I respect what you are saying, I just don't see how all prosecutorial bias can be removed. I guess that leaves defense attorneys as a source of judges. Does anyone know what percentage of judges are former prosecutors, defense attorneys or other types of attorneys?
