I have always felt sorry for the puppies in that store. The prices were WAY too high and the poor things always looked so sad. What a miserable life until they got a home. Puppy mills should be stopped.

Meaning that PetLand had planned to close it due to poor revenue, anyway, and this was a perfect opportunity to show ultimate concern. Bottom line, the hoodrats that hang out at Chapel Hill drive away people that actually have money to spend. I live 4 miles from Chapel Hill, and I haven't been there since December. It is ALWAYS the last option when I am looking to make a purchase.

I called yesterday the Akron store yesterday and was told the owner's name is Steve Winslow. Someone please look into it. The owner, Liz Carlile, and the photographer should all be charged.

I got my pet rabbit at a Petland store in GA and the entire time he was alive (he unfortunately passed away a few months ago) he was the perfect laid-back rabbit and never showed any signs of having been hurt or abused while at the Petland store. Petland was the only pet store near me that had rabbits and if not for them, I never would have gotten mine or known how much of a joy they could be to own. I think it would be a shame if the entire chain had to stop selling rabbits nation-wide because one franchise did something like this - investigate the others and if there are no more signs that animals are being mistreated, don't take away a potentially wonderful pet-owner relationship because of an isolated incident.

On that note, I seriously hope neither the owner, Liz Carlisle, or the photographer are ever allowed to work near animals again

Petland stores are notorious for buying their puppies from puppy mills. I am thrilled they are now closed for good.

As for the employee who drowned the rabbits - I hope she gets the maxiumum penalties - which, unfortunately probably won't amount to much more than a slap on the wrist.

The owners are Gary and Sharon Winslow. They own the store at Boardman as well, so feel free to give them a ring and let them know how you feel. They have no concern for the Akron store, and this has finally given them the excuse to shut down this location in hopes of making the situation not seem as bad on them.

For one it has been shown that people who do heinous crimes to animals have eventually done it to Men, Women and Children, she should be permanently off the street. One other item about PETA. They are a hypocritical organization when it comes to the killing of animals. Best example is when 2 of their members was using a PETA van in Virginia telling Vets and humane centers that the animals they were collecting to adopt out were in fact being killed in the back of that van. BigMB, well said. The owners are not necessarily at fault for the sorry actions of a couple of employees. If they actually did condone this sort of behavior, then it's another matter entirely. But somehow, I don't think the Chapel Hill Petland would have lasted as long as it did if this were indeed the case.

Personally, I think what this girl did was horrible, but let's consider the context; she didn't kill another human being. She killed two rabbits. It's a crime that warrants community service, not the death penalty.

This is a gut wrenching story. A person sick enough to do something like that needs to be locked away. If you're twisted enough to kill a poor little animal, what's to stop you from killing another human being? And just because they are going to stop selling rabbits doesn't mean that this won't happen to a puppy or kitten. They shouldn't be SELLING animals anyways. I hope the store has to stay closed and all of the animals get taken in by a non-kill shelter, people who actually care about animals.

The article is about animal abuse, not eating meat, although animals used for food are abused as well. Ohio needs to get FELONY convictions for animal abusers, not misdemeanors & this animal abuse case is 1 more sad example.

As a local dog groomer and personal victim of Petland, I am all too aware of Petland's heinous infractions on animals and people alike. While I'm happy that this store was shut down, it is only a minor victory considering all other Petlands are still open. They are NOTORIOUS for selling sick, mixed-breed puppies with false papers and false information to customers, promising that their dogs are healthy and of some value (sorry, but no "puggle" has valid papers or is worth $800). My friend worked there and was fired when a puppy fell from a high cage and broke its leg, and he took it to a vet after hours WITH HIS OWN MONEY, then RETURNED THE PUPPY TO THE STORE, because the owner refused to pay a vet bill without being positive someone was going to buy the puppy. I watched a puppy die in a childs arms while the sales girl grabbed it and said, "its just sleeping" and rushed it to the back. My mom bought a "papered" Chihuahua who had pneumonia and almost died, and after he grew to over 20 lbs she has a DNA test done... he is less than 20% Chi. And myself, who out of pity purchased a sick Golden Retriever pup, "papered" as well (which I later found out came from a completely different puppy 4 months older than mine, who HAD DIED IN THE STORE), whose knees and elbows gave out at 6 months and is now only 3 and has cancer. This does not even begin to cover the horror stories I hear (and witness) from my clients... Sorry for the rant, but please.. do not buy from Petland!!!!!!!

What kind of person would kill a poor animal? I know someone very close to me who is an animal lover and had to kill a poor innocent animal just a few days ago. While on a walk, he saw an apparently dead kitten with maggots eating its body and head, but when he walked past it, it looked at him and wagged its tail. What would you do? Sometimes killing an animal is the hardest thing to do, but the only 'right' thing. However, in this case, there should have been doctors overseeing the place. But before you make general broad sweeping statements, think about what you are saying. Sometimes it takes someone who truly cares deeply for an animal to end its suffering and not just walk past it. And by the way, he did call the police and he was not charged with any crime. Go figure.

I'm sorry my post got so long. I have just been disgusted for a very long time. I wanted to also state that I love my dogs very, very much. And while I have regrets buying from that store, we've learned a very valuable lesson, I can't regret them. I love them and will do the very best I can to make their lives better. Oh and one more thing, We do not believe our last puppy is a full blooded Great Pyrenees despite his papers. He does not look like one. He looks more like a St. Bernard Mix or a Pyrenean Mastiff, now that he's gotten older. So I'm not surprised by the comments I'm reading here regarding them selling puppies and pure bred and finding out they are indeed not.

Sharon has a good post. Most states have felony animal cruelty abuse laws, but not Ohio. That needs changed & this is one sad, sick case that can be used as an example for change. I got my rabbit that died last year at 10.5 years of age from this Petland and she was the best rabbit ever. Would it have made a HUGE difference if I'd adopted her from Petfinder? Point is, I gave a rabbit a loving home and treated her as if she were my child from the moment I took possession of her until the day she died. She was my best friend and she came from Petland. I'm sure not all Petlands hire whackos like these and I hope their hiring practices do change after this. Don't let me near that psycho though. She'd be sorry. She should be charged with felonies instead of misdemeanors.

Unfortunately working at an after hours emergency as a vet tech we saw so many puppies and kittens come in with parvo, FELV (feline luekimia) FIV (feline AIDS) that all came from petland with so called papers. All had papers that said they were vaccinated yet when we asked Petland for the records of proof they told us they couldn't find them. FYI, you have to keep vet records on the property for seven years!! There is no way around this law. Be very aware when you buy animals from pet stores, or breeders, or petfinders. Always get a copy of medical records. They should have the stickers from each vial of vaccines given and they are not allowed to sell any animal under 8 weeks old. By then that animal should have at least it's first set of vaccines and hopefully the second set. If the they claimed to have dewormed it that must also be on the record of how much and what drug and dose. Too many people buy from pet stores thinking it's more legit than breeders when it usually is not. Learn about everything before you venture into a pet store for your new pet. FYI- most veterinarians and technicians will asnwer questions over the phone on what you should look for and need to get from the seller. This is defianatly buyer beware kind of deal.
Just a side note- your animal isn't fully vaccinated until 2 weeks after the third set of vaccines. Keep the little ones off the ground outside until that time.

We got a dog from a pet store just like this one. A handsome black german shepherd. He had severe kennel cage syndrome and had to be put down. I will never buy another dog from a pet store. You are always better off getting a dog from an individual. Mutts are free and grateful for a second chance.

Here's what I think, Miss Carlisle got fired for a separate incident and a way to get back at her "former" employer would be to post this image on Facebook and notify the PETA idiots. This would satisfy her desire to get even and would make a great headline for the PETA idiots. I think we should look beyond the "bunny" fog and try and see the truth here or at least a Common Sense answer.

As far as the rabbits go, throw them in a pot of boiling water and feed them to the homeless, they're just rabbits and people kill them for food all the time.

I believe all the posts about illegal and unethical happenings at Petland; however, if there are so many why was it still in business? Weren't these incidents reported? I'd expect the vets to report at least.

The hospital I worked for did report it. Unfortunately the AVMA is extremely slow. As you can tell. Dr. Harts is still in business and she has plenty of complaints and thousands of dollars worth of finds. The vets giving the complaints can only do so much, it's the AVMA and especialy the Ohio VMA that needs to finish the job by giving these pet stores and backdoor vets something more than a slap on the wrist.

I worked at a pet store at chapel hill 20 yrs. ago, it was at the main entrance called "Docktor Pets", i would go to throw away my lunch in the garbage and there would be a dead cat or kitten just laying on top of the garbage. no wrapping around it. ALL of the puppies came from puppy mills and 90% of the time they were diseased and 70% of the time they would break out in seizures spontaneously in their tiny wire cages behind glass. the store had an unseen 'sick room' that was appalling with dirty tiny cages in a dim lit room in the back storage closet and it was always packed, and if an animal died, it was thrown in the trash like an empty coffee cup. i left there traumatized and tried to get them in trouble , to no avail. i cried when i saw that story on the news. and puppy mills should be illegal. those poor rabbitts were tortured to death. you can tell ALOT about a person if they hate animals or laugh at animal cruelty.

I think that what she did was put two rabbits out of their misery. The PETA idiots website says the rabbits were bitten, one was missing an eye and one was partially paralized, it would have been more inhumane to let them suffer any longer.

I have purchased one of my chinchillas at this store and she had been diagnoised with a heart problem when I called to let the manager know that there was a problem all they could say to me is well I'll let the breeder know! Also I have been through that store many many times and have gone by the chinchillas cages and have complained to the store's manager and or person in charge that the chinchillas needed to be in a different part of the store that they weren't doing well (health wise, I have raised well over 20 chinchillas)and I picked one of the sick ones up and pointed out what exactly was wrong with it and said you need to get this to a vet and they said well I let the owner know!!! I reported them!

I have been to other petland stores and they actually care for the animals. I think that the one at chapel hill has bad owners, bad employees who dont care. They just want to make money.

Hey "Use Common Sense" Some people actually care about animals and treat their pets right. YOU OBVIOUSLY DON'T so why don't you get off this thread.

I'm thinking that a woman who could willingly drown an animal and not think twice about it is a dangerous individual. If the animals were injured, then let a vet euthanize them. That's the humane method. There's no excuse for drowning those rabbits, and to hold them up and smile for a photo afterward shows a sick mind. It's not a far reach that animal killers can progress to people killers.

Good gracious, what is wrong with people? It's a good thing Petland is closed down too, that franchise has been having issues with their pets coming from puppy mills, as others have noted. And as said above, there are millions of animals who need loving homes at shelters everywhere. Why would anyone pay for an animal? Please help these poor pets out with a good home!

I think this is absolutely horrible. I am glad they are shutting Petland down and wish they would close all of them down or only allow them to sell pet products. Or even do pet adoption days like Pet Smart and Petco do. The animals sold at these stores like Pet Land are from puppy mills and breeders that are not reputable. I know several people that have bought dogs from these stores and they develop health issues over time. I sure hope they find a place for the animals that were at this store. This story just disgusts me to no end.

@Usecommonsense - I apologize for my wording. I should have specified, but because of your moniker, I assumed you would be able to understand where I was getting at. I was incorrect.

Plants are incapable of nociception, which is the ability to feel and respond to pain. While we should of course use caution in our use of plants as resources because of how the abuse of this usage negatively affects our ecosystem, it is not the same as causing harm to a living creature who IS capable of feeling pain.

As human beings, we do need to respect ALL living things. However, the respect that we show differs depending on whether or not the living thing in question can feel pain.

Is that a satisfactory response for you?

This store should have been closed along time ago. They over charge customers for the animals, not enough staffing, the animals stinks and allows the public to mishandle the animals.

Ok well I made a really long post last night and it looks like it didn't post for some reason. I will try to make it shorter. In the past 3 years we've purchased two dogs from the Petland at Chapel Hill Mall. Good experience with the first one for the first two years so we decided to get another one of the "same" breed. 2nd dog was sick & made my 3 other dogs sick & cost us hundreds of dollars to make everyone well. Owner of store gave us a gift card from his store saying that it would help offset our vet costs. How so really? Then a 2 weeks after getting 2nd dog there, 1st dog started to have seizures. Her meds cost us $100 a month. She's had at least 1 seizure a month in the past 15 months. Then 2nd dog (who is currently 17 months old) was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia on one side, less severe on other side, & both front legs have deterioration. So in May when he was 14 months old, we took him to OSU for hip replacement surgery. Cost? $4200. He can now act like the puppy he was meant to be. Instead of crying in pain & struggling to stand up & walk like he was. I wrote a letter to the owner about this begging for our money back that we spent on him, ($1200) to help us pay for his surgery. I wasn't asking for him to pay for the surgery. The dog was diagnosed before he was a year old. But that man doesn't care like he claimed to in the letter he wrote back to me. I got another offer of a gift card to his store (no amount stated) to help offset our cost as if there is anything in that store that we would want or need at this point. & the dog's breed was to be a pure-bred Great Pyrenees. As he has aged, he does not look like one & looks to have St. Bernard or Pyrenean Mastiff in him. I love my dogs & wouldn't trade them for anything in the world but we learned a very, very costly lesson from that place. I'm so glad it's finally closed! Shame on you people!

Now animals... The rabbits are just animals just like deer, cows, sheep, squirrel, etc., etc. They were put on gods green earth for us to eat and enjoy, so I plan on eating and enjoying as many as I can. As someone once said, "If god didn't plan on us eating animals, he wouldn't have made them taste so good." I do appreciate trees, (I can't believe I'm responding to this), they like other plants provide a source of materials that protect us and some provide food. So you can see I do appreciate animals and plants (some with a little gravy) and will continue eating them as god has intended for us to do. As far as the girl goes, I still believe she's setup the store and is working side by side with those goofs, PETA.

I won't get into the vegetarian argument with you. I am obviously a vegetarian, and I do realize that some people's views are different from mine, and while I think these people are wrong, I try not to be condescending because they have a right to their opinion. However, taking pleasure in torturing and murdering a defenseless animal can be interpreted as psychotic behavior. Jeffrey Dahmer started his rampage by torturing and killing animals, much like other violent criminals out there. So this should be taken seriously.

NO I would not grill a dog or cat... however I have eat'in them. I lived in Italy for several years while I was in the Air Force and was told to leave my dog in the US since they eat them there. Since I was in Italy, do as the Italians do. The Jeffery Dahlmer/animal cruelty thing is a weak excused used by vegetarian groups to put down meat eaters and it's comical when brought up. The rest of the world eats animals, even dogs and cats, and 99% aren't crazy they're just hungry. In Italy I ate dogs and cats, yuck; horse meat, yuck; quail, goat, boar, finches, octopus, grouse, mule, and dove. (probably more) Just because you're a bleeding heart doesn't mean others are.

@Usecommonsense - You missed my point entirely. I said I do not put down meat eaters. How can I? I am the only vegetarian in my family. What I said was, there is a direct correlation between abusive/violent behavior (whether it's abuse towards other people or towards animals) and psychosis. Do some research. Many violent criminals (including Dahmer and other serial killers) begin their crime sprees by hurting animals. Therefore, acts of cruelty against animals SHOULD be taken seriously - if not because you believe it's wrong, but at least because it's indicitave of dangerous behavior.

If they were injured as severely as you say then they should of been taken to a vet and either treated or euthanized. Believe it or not there are rescue groups for rabbits that would of nursed these animals to health if possible. Rabbits are fragile animals, picking up one wrong and you can easily break it's back.
As I said plenty of times in many post regarding animals. There is a difference between food animals and domesticated animals. These rabbits were bred to be pets and drowning is a very cruel way to die. Let someone shove your head under water and let me know how you feel. They do feel and respond the same way we do. Think about that for a second.

As for PETA, I've been a vet tech for 10 years all across this country and some are way out of there minds and some aren't. I guess it depends on who you run into.
You also laughed at someone who treated a baby G-pig. I've dealt with a guy who sold his house to pay for treatment for his dog that was hit by a car. Love can make us do some crazy things when it comes to our pets.

First, skin the rabbit and quarter it. Inject the meat with some apple juice. The next day, get good meat-rub give it good coating. Set your grill up for indirect heat. Sprinkle the rabbit with a little oil so that your rub does not burn, then put the meat on the inactive side of your grill. Once you get a good seared side (about 20 minutes) flip it and finish it out on the other side. Once you bite it, you will see what the apple juice does for the taste of that wascally wabbit.

Here's PETA's agenda in their own words... "PETA has called on the owner of Petland chain, Ed Kunzelman, and its president Frank Difatta, to no longer sell rabbits at any of its stores nationwide."

Carlisle's agenda is a little more complex, either she made a bundle from Peta to post that pic or her agenda is to get back at her boss and Petland for whatever reason. But either way they're both getting what they want.

If you haven't clicked on the PETA link above take a look at it, then ask yourself, why would Carlisle let PETA post her pic on the front page of their website? She was a former employee of Petland, and she said her manager took the picture that's posted. So a former disgruntled employee has found a way to bring down the store that fired her (or she quit from), plus possibly her boss.

Try and put aside the animal issue and see beyond that, look at the possiblilties of Peta to use this to further their agenda and Carlisle to make a few bucks, (possibly a lot of bucks) on the side.

Here's the only problem with my theory... Carlisle has to know that she'll need to find a job eventually. I'm part of a large organization and I occasionally sit on committes that are created for the purpose of hiring employees. Once we come down to our last dozen or so applicants, we begin the process of checking Facebook, Twitter, Google and etc as sort of a quick check to see whether the candidates are druggy's, or whatever. Many applicants have been knock out of contention for a position because of what we find. If other companies use this same method, Carlisle will never find employment, especially in the local area. It doesn't make sense if she allowed this to happen unless it was well worth her wild or she's very stupid.

What happened in this Akron Petland was a terrible thing, but whats worse is that these sorts of incidents happen at various Petland locations all the time.

Please try to understand that what you see in the photograph above is just a girl that has been completely desensitized by Petland's frequent abusive practices. Petland is business that cares about income above all else. Is it so hard to believe that they would ask an employee to inhumanely kill an animal, rather than pay for its medical expenses or euthanasia bill? This pet store chain gets all of their puppies from puppy mills, which is a statement in itself that they don't really care about the treatment of their animals.

Regardless, what you see in the above picture is just a person. Yes, she did something wrong and she will be held accountable for her actions, but that doesn't justify doing wrong things to her. By harassing her or posting death threats, you are dehumanizing yourselves and you are not any better than she was.

Are we still in the United States of America? What ever happened to "Innocent until proven guilty?" Has this become a country of Guilty until proven Innocent? Why are we so quick to judge without knowing all the facts? She has been charged not convicted. A picture can be taken out of context. We really don't know where, when or it why was taken and how, who or why it was posted on facebook. Almost everyone here has made judgments against this American woman without knowing the full truth. The only people who know what really happened are the actual people involved. Everyone has a right to their personal ideals, but prejudging someone guilty before they have a chance to prove their innocence is ignorant and unconstitutional. Let the courts handle this case and be happy our judicial system still allows a person to be deemed innocent until proven guilty, for all our sakes.

There is no logical reason why anyone would kill an innocent animal and be happy about it. If they were euthanizing it due to injuries, it should have been handeled by a vet and made sure they did not feel the pain.
My rabbits are my children. I wouldn't dare harm an animal just as much as I wouldn't dare harm a child. They can feel as much pain as a person. But clearly you have no morals nor a soul.

This story troubled me but what is almost as troubling is everyone's posts. One person was accused of "clearly not having a soul". Another person is a very sick human being who needs counseling. I dont even know what to say if the animals were injured and needed to be put down then fine put them down but there is sure a more humane way to do it than to drown them and then of all things to do to take photos and reguardless if you post them or not in my opinion just to take the photos in the first place is kinda messed up i think they should be punished but in reguards to the owners and corporate head quartes how in the H E double hockey sticks were they to know that this was going on i believe whole hartedly that they knew no such thing was going on

First of all, I don't condone what this woman did. I think anyone who can kill an animal for revenge or their own enjoyment is SICK in the head. That said....

Everyone posting on here who is so outraged are vegetarians, right?! I mean you couldn't possibly be so hostile about the subject of animal cruelty and sit down and eat a hamburger or chicken wings. You do now how THOSE animals are killed right? Slit throats, wring their necks, electric prods, hit betweent the eyes with a metal stake. You certainly couldn't eat a bite of meat because those poor, adorable little animals were killed.

This girl is twisted. I guess she thought she was Dr. Kervorkian or something. Watch her cry in court talking about how sorry she is. Somebody needs to put her head in the toilet and flush it. She is cruel.

it doesn't mean we are vegetarians. Killing animals to eat and killing them for the heck of it are two different things. People that do with this woman did, sometimes end up being on American's Most Wanted or something because they heartlessly killed a human. sometimes killing animals as a joke are just the start or something even more cruel.

It upon occasion tis observed that some unruly brigands need the maximum measure necessary to inflict a wound that not only purifies character but wounds pride as well. Then there are those beyond sanity that darkly enters madness that only deserves condemnation and isolation by far prey tell.

I wish the people felt this way about children and good government. We can have bad government that is ok with doing away with humans but dont kill an animal.

What good would that possible do? If you get any pleasure out of causing her to suffer, than you should not consider yourself any better than the person you assume she is.

I believe that this picture was only taken and posted to shock people.

bunmum: If the quotes that you have listed are true, then consider the possibility that she had said them because she wasn't enjoying what she was doing. To me, the words "just die" show that she wanted it to be over as quickly as possible. For those of you that don't know, she was only killing the rabbits in order to end their suffering, because they had sustained severe injuries after attacking each other repeatedly for a number of days.

I completely agree that the rabbits should have been humanely euthanized. However, Petland is a business, therefore they prefer to make money rather than spend money. If she hadn't done it, surely another employee would have.

NCmom: you are absolutely right. Anyone upset by the image of drowned rabbits, if you aren't a vegetarian, then you should be aware that you are supporting animal abuse far worse than this with every piece of meat that you consume.

It is unfair to call anyone heartless based on a picture, although what she did was wrong. As everyone here that has judged her may know, good people do bad things all the time.

This makes me sick. We bought 2 rabbits from that pet store. The first one died the night we brought it home. They gave us a second one and that one had some kind of tumor on it's back after a couple of weeks. I took it to our vet and she said that there was nothing she could do for it. She said to take it back to the store and make sure that they had a policy of humanly caring for this sick animal, if not, to bring it back to her. I took it back and they refunded my money and assured me that they would care for the animal. They had a vet that took care of the animals and that the rabbit would be treated humanly....now of course I am wondering....

The cruelty against all animals at all Petland stores is horrific. Price gouged & mass bred animals (from puppy mills and other horrific breeders) need to be stopped. Not only are these animals often sick or brain damaged, many of these neglected pets are just given to shelters or put down. Send a message by boycotting all Petland stores!

I feel sorry for those rabbits & any other animal that enters a pet store. Most pet stores get their pets from unqualified breeders & puppy mills. Adopt an animal from a rescue group & work to get FELONY convictions for animal cruelty not misdemeanors.
