The flier went out to neighbors in bold letters: CHILD RAPIST.
The text contained the name and address of the accused with more bold words: BE ALERT! PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN.
Rodd Sutton, formerly of Akron, was the target of the flier. It was another part of his contentious custody dispute that began more than 10 years ago with his ex-wife, Victoria Douglas.
Police and Summit County Children Services investigated the rape complaint in 2004, when Douglas alleged her husband had inappropriate contact with their daughter, now 10.
Authorities found the charges untrue, but that didn't stop the ex-wife from passing out the fliers to neighbors.
The husband, 46, then went on the offensive, suing his ex-wife and her mother.
A Summit County jury this month sided with Sutton, awarding him more than $1.2 million in damages for defamation, invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Sutton's attorneys, Tim Hanna and James Campbell, said collecting the settlement might be an issue, but the case is about more than money, they said.
''Maybe it's not about the issue of collecting,'' Campbell said. ''Maybe it's about the principal of vindicating this guy and showing you can stand up for what you believe in.''
Neither Douglas nor her attorney, Larry Shenise, were available for comment.
Paper consumes the dockets of the ex-couple's divorce and civil lawsuits with hundreds of entries and countless reams of motions filled with allegations of child abuse and drug use, as well as contempt of court findings against each side over visitation and other issues.
The case took a more public turn when Sutton sued over the fliers distributed to neighbors. It happened after complaints of sexual abuse lodged against the husband by the ex-wife in 2004.
Douglas, 44, made the allegations to Akron and Springfield police, Akron Children's Hospital and Children Services.
Each agency found no evidence of abuse.
Sutton's attorneys contend Douglas transferred a house in Lakemore from her name to her mother, Rosemary Douglas, to save it from possible loss in the defamation lawsuit.
A jury awarded Sutton $136,000 from his former mother-in-law for the property transaction. Victoria Douglas now resides in Florida with her daughter.
The case was heard by a jury and Judge Alison McCarty.
Campbell said the only question asked by jurors was whether they could give Sutton more money than he was seeking.

Sorry ladies, like 80% of sexual abuse accusations are phony. My friend's 20-year-old son spent 18 months in Grafton and has to register for 25 years because of some teenage employee's lies.

I witnessed the trial of this case and saw how it all played out. It would be quite impossible to include all of the important evidence in a short article like this, but it was very clear that this man was innocent. Furthermore Victoria Douglas showed signs of severe mental illness. The next step of this case isn't collecting the money, it is using the verdict of the jury to take custody away from the mother. The little girl is certainly the truest victim here, as is Rodd Sutton.

I’ll have you know that 80%, if not more, of purported sexual assaults involving anyone, let alone parents on children, have zero, that means NO, evidence Jason. Cuyahoga County will prosecute these cases and they win, thank you very much. Some Medina County police departments won’t even make a report if there is no evidence in a rape case. If you want stats on this issue look at www.glennsacks.com . You will see other stories of females doing the same thing. To bad summit county DR court sides with the female even when the female lies this court does nothing to punish the female for lying.

They ought to make a new law stating,if you accuse someone of sexual abuse of a minor,and your are wrong,lying,trying to hurt your spouse,and they find you wrong,then have it be an automatic jail sentence for ten years.and put their picture in the paper.This woman is a piece of shi* and dont even deserve to have her daughter with her.Im sure she told her daugher all sorts of nasty stories just to make her hate her father,and the gramma probably did the same thing.She is just as guilty Id file a charge against her too.

On the other hand my ex husband molested our daughter and because she was so young, they said it was her word against his. However, child protective services, counselors and the judge believed her. And so did me and my family. My daughter was just to graphic. My exes family spread lies around town and said that me and my family put it in my daughters head etc. It wasn't until a couple of years later that he admitted it to his family that he did it. His family then called me to apologize for all the mean and hurtful things that they said about me and my family. They just could not believe there precious boy/brother would or could do such a thing.

Sexual allegations should be investigated very thoroughly, and, like many religions and cultures, if the allegations prove to be false, then the accuser gets the sentence they tried to hit the other person with.

I was a witness on behalf of Rodd Sutton..My son and his daughter played together as they were little and I've know Rodd for many years!! He's been around my two daughters and loves them, He will be trying to get his daughter that he loves very much!! The ex-wife Vicki does need help really bad, I was the one who went around his neighborhood collecting the envelopes that she sent in the mail and hand written..duh! Writing expert to prove it was her! Why the judge in the domestic court didn't give Rodd his daughter is unreal..The ex didn't even have the balls enough to stay to hear the verdict from the jury!! Does that tell ya anything?

I was in the courtroom every minute and Rodd is innocent beyond a shadow of a doubt and it was proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. It's beaches like you who f**k up the entire judicial system. Maybe you should look up Victoia Sutton's address and become her room mate. Looks like she'll need the money. Furthermore, criminal charges will be filed against this so called mother for child abuse. You can visit her in jail. You would be her only friend. Read the facts lady. You and Victoria will both be judged as you climb the stairway to heaven and you will be kicked back down the stairs into the pits of hell. Good luck. Please remember people. Rodd took a polygraph--2 polygraphs by one of the most renound polygraph techicians in the area used often by the Akron police dept, many other police departments, the FBI and CIA. He passed with flying colors. Failing would have meant LIFE IN PRISON for him. WHY DID VOCTORIA REFUSE TO TAKE THE POLYGRAPH??? THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMMMMMMMM. He was not forced to take the polygraph. He volunteered freely. Not to mention the handwriting experts, psychology experts and many more.

sometimes divorces are very ugly and husbands/wives are bitter but we shouldnt make false accusations this wife thought by doing this this would hurt her ex husband just as much as the pain she endured throughout there marriage but it back fired she probably brainwashed the kid who probably loves her dad and will grow up to hate mom. its really said how sick people are and how far they will go just to hurt someone else. Please Mr. Sutton, make sure to track all Douglas assets. You will need to place a lien on them immediately. Second, seek legal counsel in reference forum shopping for the best likelihood of returning your daughter to you. Third, seek therapy for your daughter after her return to you - she will need debriefing. It is imperative that you take these steps for your daughter's sake. Although your name may have been cleared, consider your daughter, as a twenty year old woman. If you do not take these steps now, she will assume all men are bad and not believe it worthwhile to look for a good one.
We wonder, in today's world why women seem to be attracted to "bad boys." The answer is simple. When a girl grows up, if she lacks a good and mature paternal figure in her growing years, she will have no reason to seek one as a mate later in life. In fact, she may ultimately grow so bitter towards men that she may indeed end up as Ms. Douglas evidently has in this case.
As a single father myself, I have learned that there is so much more to being a father than bringing home a paycheck. Let this serve as a call to ALL men ... be there for your children ... raise them well ... or you shall surely see them turn into damaged adults. You are not guilty of this Mr. Sutton. However, your ex-spouse proves my point eloquently. I see no mention of a father in her life.

These types of allegations can completely destroy a person. How do I know? This also happened to me. I have the DVD interview between my ex and my little girl (5 years old at the time). the interview is a joke and the ex was surely trying to backpeddle out of the situation that she caused. The detective told me that the ex was coached by the lawyer and this is also evident in the DVD interview. I am taking civil charges against the lawyer. I am currently working with a lawyer on a contigency basis. My goal is to get this lawyer that coached my ex disbarred. This is the most horrible thing that has ever happened to me and every day I think about it and what my daughter was put through unnecessarily. I hope to God that women who are thinking about doing this come to their senses and never make any type of false allegations of these sorts no matter how much it hurts and not matter how badly one may want to cause pain to the other.

I have a 3yr old girl. Mom's mental health is in question. Mom has falsely accused me, causing a great deal of problems for me. All accusations have been legally dismissed. The lies are obvious but there is no stopping the continuous strife this woman causes. She has moved over 10X and lived with 4 different men. She is now married but has already had an affair. Along the way my child has been forced into her chaotic and unstable lifestyle while I am always on defense. Mom has been tresspassed off the property I live on along with her on again off again boyfriend. I am only scratching the surface. More than anything I want to save my little girl from pain. She always wants to stay w/me not because I encourage it but I believe its solely about security. She should be out of this chaos. at the very least mom should be evaluated. I do not have the money due to losing my job as a result of her false allegations. My lawyer has been faithful but I can't buy enough his time. we are to have a trial next mo. on 6 motions of contemp on mom. As the father is there anything that can be suggested to the court or my lawyer that would help me get a change of custody?What can I do?
I am ready to fight for what's right! Children should not be a tool for evil and nobody should endure the pain of a false accusation of this magnitude. Good luck to Mr. Sutton as we pray for you and all the innocent children and falsely accused.

This horrible that women can brainwash children to destroy a mans life with total disreguard to what they are doing to the child. Falsely accusing someone of child abuse is child abuse. My family is going through something very similar but we do not have the funds to prove my husbands innocense, and in child abuse case everyone assumes the man is guilty. Very discouraging, so to hear this shines a ray of hope my way.
