AL Central could be better, Wedge says

By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal staff writer

CLEVELAND: The American League Central Division is being panned as the worst in the majors, with the first-place Detroit Tigers only nine games over .500 going into Tuesday night's game at Progressive Field.

Indians manager Eric Wedge was asked if he thought the division had underachieved.

''I think everybody would feel that way,'' he said. ''I think we all feel like we can be better, that we should have been better.

''I don't think anyone would have anticipated where the division is right now.''

LONG, LONG SEASON — Each member of the Tribe's rotation will have no more than two starts before the season ends. That's probably a good thing, because fatigue might be setting in.

''I feel like we have two or three guys who are in uncharted territory,'' said Wedge, but refused to name names. ''The physical part is one thing, but the mental grind is also real.''

SWITCHEROO — Michael Brantley moved from center field to left, and Trevor Crowe, who usually is in left, moved to center Tuesday night.

''I want those guys to get experience playing both positions,'' Wedge said. ''We might keep it this way for a couple of games then switch it back.''

When Grady Sizemore returns next year, after recuperating from two operations, he will go back to his regular slot in center, and both Brantley and Crowe (if both make the team) primarily will be left fielders.

SOCIAL NOTE — Columbus manager Torey Lovullo, who was summoned to Cleveland after the Triple-A season, has left the Tribe to get married in California, his home state. Taking his place will be Aeros skipper Mike Sarbaugh.

Yeah Wedge, it could be better. Of course, that might require your team being better, and your owner actually committing to talented players instead of cheap ones.

I predict it will be better too.....Wedge will be gone, which instantly makes it better, lol.

Kidding (slightly) there. Honestly though....think the division will be just as bad next year unless the Tigers, Twins, and ChiSox improve via free agency/trades this winter.

Twins rotation is a mess. They have young talent...but no one that you can say will give you 200 innings. Bringing Pavano back may not be a bad idea for them.

White Sox need a leadoff hitter, 2B and a CFer (or RF if Rios is playing CF). Could need a DH too if both Thome and Dye don't return.

And Peavy is a question mark in my eyes. He struggles away from Yellowstone...err, I mean Petco Park. I think he's gonna get a rough dose of reality pitching in the Cell.

Tigers are the team that could improve....but Mags option vesting here could hurt. He's declining fast offensievly. They may need more pitching too cause after Verlander they could be hurting. Porcello should improve...but Jackson has strugled in the 2nd half. Could have been an abnormal 1st half and this is the norm. Rodney being a free agent doesn't help the pen either.
