Indians interview former Nationals manager

By Tom Withers
Associated Press

CLEVELAND: Former Washington Nationals manager Manny Acta has been interviewed by the Indians for their managerial opening.

Acta, fired by the Houston Astros in July, spoke with Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro by phone earlier this week. The Indians are conducting initial interviews with candidates by phone from their training complex in Goodyear, Ariz. The team plans to bring finalists to Cleveland for a second round of interviews.

Acta said in an e-mail to The Associated Press that he was excited about the opportunity and that the Indians told him they would get back to him next week.

The Indians fired Eric Wedge in the final days of their worst season since 1991.

Acta will interview with the Astros on Friday for their manager's job.

Sooooooo - what was the Nationals record when he coached them?

Shapiro liked this guy because he said yes 45 times in a 3 minute conversation.

For those that either don't know anything about baseball, or don't know anything about this guy, let's make it simple.

He used to be the manager of the Nationals =
158-252 record over two and a half years, 10th worst in major league history.

I would rather have a motivated minor league coach.

People around here sure like to refer to their baseball manager as "coach."

It's funny because Hargrove used to have a big sign right over his desk that said...DON'T CALL ME COACH!

This is a football area. Baseball is an afterthought.

Where's George Hendrick? What a motivator he could be, "do as I say, not as I did".

I wonder if they would interview me? Hey how bad could it be, I am a truck driver and have lots of experience dealing with idiots on the road. Kinda like baseball isn't it? I could save them money and drive the team truck cause I have a CDL, plus I would would manage the team for 150K.....substantially less than what they paid Wedgey...so what if I don't know much about baseball.

Is Shapiro still running the Indians? If he is, it won't make any difference if they would hire Jesus to manage the Indians. That guy is half of what's wrong with the outfit; the other half is Lerner.

Why do you think that Lerner is responsible for the Indians problems? I think he has his hands full running the Browns into the ground.

Hey, Acta was a minor league teammate of Herb Score and Rocky Colavito! What a great resume clincher! He knows our history of bad luck and bad trades, therefore the futility continues! 39 more years and we get a '100' patch on our sleeve. YES!

While you're at it you might as well interview the coach of the Wahington Generals! He's due for a winning season!

@rm kraus,

I would have to say no to Jesus as well. The word on the street is that he tends to leave his pitchers in to long and calls a lousy hit and run.

Maybe we should have been a bit clearer to Shapiro: when we said we wanted a manager with "experience", we meant experienced at WINNING!!! Is he just throwing a dart at a wall of former MLB managers' names or what?

The other hot rumor on the wire is that Shapiro will be interviewing former Bad News Bears manager Walter Matthau this week.

I heard Billy Martin just bought Brady Quinn's house. At least Martin's team would be more fun to watch.

Well, Casey Stengel managed some terrible National League teams before leading the Yankees to numerous pennants & World Series victories.

Of course, Acta ain't Stengel. And the Tribe doesn't exactly have Maris, Mantle, Martin, Richardson, Kubek, Boyer, Howard, Skowron, Terry, Turley, Ford, Berra....

@DS,

ha. First off, it's Albert Belle (with an 'e')....but that was funny.

I'd love to see Hafner and Belle go at it and start and all out brawl, ala Major League II, lol.
