Customer claims to have found wire in sausage

Canal Fulton Provision has recalled 5,000 pounds of ground meat and sausage after a customer claimed to have found a piece of wire inside sausage.
The meat wholesaler operates a retail butcher shop at 2014 Locust St., Canal Fulton. The company also sells to local restaurants and other food service establishments.
The recall is based on one customer complaint, company manager Jeff Mizarek said.
He said a customer who purchased pork sausage from the butcher shop brought it back on Oct. 24 and made the claim, which the company is still investigating. ''We're trying to determine what happened,'' he said.
No other complaints have been made.
Mizarek said the company is working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and issued the recall as a precaution. This is the first time Canal Fulton Provision has issued a recall since the business opened in 1969.
The recall pertains to ground beef, ground chuck and ground pork sausage, with production and sale dates of Oct. 22, 23, 24 and 26.
Mizarek said the company already has tracked down most of the meat in question, much of which never left the plant. ''We feel we have the bulk of it here,'' he said.
The company is urging any customer who purchased the recalled meat to not eat it and to return it to Canal Fulton Provision for a full refund. Anyone with questions should call the company at 330-854-3502.
