Two men were shot during a party at a four-unit apartment complex in Fairlawn early Sunday morning.
The victims, both 21-year-old males, were slightly wounded when two unidentified men entered through an unlocked front door of the ground-floor apartment in the 2600 block of Chamberlain Road about 12:20 a.m. and one of them fired three shots, authorities said.
There were approximately 20 people at the party at the time of the incident.
One man was shot in the right forearm; the other was shot in the left foot. They were taken to Akron General Medical Center by a private vehicle, police said.
Descriptions of the intruders were limited because the residence was dimly lit.
The shooter is described as a black man, 6 feet tall, 160 pounds and wearing dark clothing.
The other man is described only as wearing dark clothing.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fairlawn detective bureau at 330-670-4308.

In Fairlawn? What is this world coming too! I thought this type of behavior only happens in Akron, Cleveland, etc.!!!!!
Obviously there was a motive.
Can you say S E C T I O N 8 ? We have to let the "less fortunate" live where people who work and earn something live.
Is there section 8 housing in fairlawn? At an Apartment complex? I guess the perps thought that the people at the party had either drugs or money. Or they were just mad that they werent invited.
Last one out, please turn off the lights !!!
Most of the Chamberlain neighborhood is section 8 or low income housing. It is behind theRiviera Bowling lanes.
that use to be a great neighborhood in the late 70's and early 80's
It was nice until the liberals moved in.
I used to live in a duplex on Chamberlain in Fairlawn, and before that in an apartment on Kenridge (next street over). Not the best of neighborhoods then. But as far as I know it was not mostly section 8. Just lots of young people starting out, who wanted to live in a decent area.
Its often the outside element, not necessarily the people who live there or were shot. Similar to that Kent student that was beat up a week or more ago, and then died. Both men arrested are from Akron, and do not attend Kent State.
Sheila and her typical political BS.
Hey Daddys girl I got a feeling this is some more Urban thugs from Akron. You know it's getting bad when they are shooting up Fairlawn.
Howdy Akronites, I lived out on RT 18 years ago when all that was in the Fairlawn area were farms and fields. I watched the apartments being built from the very first one. Can't remember any problems or shootings back then. Must be the new way of life. I see what I want and will do anything to get it. Kinda like, what's mine is mine and what's yours is mine. Gee, isn't life great?
I am so tired of hearing people bash others on Section 8...I have a news flash for you...crime happens every where and in every walk of life! As one who is very grateful for her Section 8 it makes me sick to hear all the rude comments about us!
I take care of my home which I have been in for 4 years...it may not "belong" to me, but I treat it as though it does. Try walking a mile in someones shoes that are less fortunate than you high and mighty jerks...yes, there are those that dont feel the way I do or care about there home, but you know what, same is true for the "one" eye sore house in almost every neighborhood these days!It doesnt matter who or how the rent is being paid,it is the person and their moral character or lack there of that should be questioned!
So please, the next time you run your mouth...dont, you look like total morons!
St Leo
The section of Chamberlain where the shooting was is on the other side of Miller Rd-behind Rocknes. I wondered why there was so much police activity down there. My complex isn't section 8-atleast not yet. Time to move!
>>>>>>In Fairlawn? What is this world coming too! I thought this type of behavior only happens in Akron, Cleveland, etc.!!!!!
You must not follow the news too closely.
Where did that horrible rampage happen a few years ago when that guy took the young Kent student hostage in her apt. then murdered her?
Where was the last police officer murdered around here? Twinsburg was it?
Vandalism at Jackson High. Crime happens all over the area but Akron is still the safest large city in Ohio.
"Crime happens all over the area but Akron is still the safest large city in Ohio."
That's about the equivalent of being the best prima ballerina in all of Galveston Texas or the most law abiding Mafia Capo!
@QuickDraw,
18 years ago? More like 28/38 for that neighborhood. You been gone too long. Best you stay away and let us deal with our own problems.
Look out West Si-eeed! THUGS IN DA HOUSE!!!
Yikes! Dats my 'hood!
:0)
Typical....20 thugs at a party, gunshots ring out and nobody calls the police. Fairlawn PD didn't get called until the hospital called them.
Okay Tracey, FOUR years in SECTION 8? Do you want to get out, are you trying or just comfortable in low income housing? And yes, it is the people in SECTION 8, most there are doing nothing to better themselves or the community or the country. It is all about "What's in it for me?" The element they bring along with them brings the entire neighborhood down. Hence we have shootings at a party in Fairlawn.
And Steve, where do you suppose the killers in Kent are from? SECTION 8 perhaps?
@sheila,
Shut up. The black community is just keepin' it real. White folks can't escape from my Section 8 brothas.
@Angry_Afri_Ameri Keep living in the 1850's. It's really doing well for you and your very, very extended family. Exactly what is "keeping it real," what does that mean that you will never take advantage of opportunities afforded you or you just want to be low life? Please enlighten me.
@Tracey,
I agree with Sheila.
You posted: "It doesnt matter who or how the rent is being paid,it is the person and their moral character or lack there of that should be questioned!"
You may be of moral character, but we have been paying for your moral character (and those of much less) for four years or more now. Please stop sponging off the taxpayers.
Thank you.
:0/
Fairlawn is being invaded by west akron hoodies.....ahhhhh
>>>>>That's about the equivalent of being the best prima ballerina in all of Galveston Texas or the most law abiding Mafia Capo!
You missed the point that it could be much worse. There's crime in every city this size. Way less here than in similar towns tho.
Maybe there's still time for you to go live in Dayton or Toledo if you want. Try that out and get back to us.
Lets guess how many kids Tracey has and by how many different fathers? Oh and how much in welfare does she pull in a month?
They got guns in Fairlawn?
Good thing they got bad aim.
Let the racism begin.
All the landlords I know won't rent to section 8ers, because of all the problems the tenants bring. Even though they would get more per month. Tracey, you may be an exception.
Sheila, I have been laid off from an automaker for almost 2yrs. I will be on Section 8 1yr in February. Goin to school and using the system that I paid into for many years. BTW, Section 8 pays a portion; it's based on the person's income. I could care less what you or anybody thinks. Bigotry much?
Think the Fairlawn PD had to bring Akron PD in to show them how you process a shooting scene ? Ha This is exactly what happens when you have Section 8. Look at the area of West Akron off N Hawkins and Thurmont Rd...once a nice area with young professionals starting out now is a gangland 1/4 mile from the nicest houses in Akron.
hey obama 2009 your one sucess story out of thousands. most smoke newports rob stores and drink 40's and cheap booze. and obama lied and will go down as the worst president ever. socialist pig
oh lets all move away, thats the answer
Fairlawn isn't what it used to be. It's become GHETTO!
First of all, I dont normally defend myself, but I find this as an opportunity to educate....I have 2 daughters, all by the same man...I have a foster daughter and a foster son, so what does that make me...oh....right a FOSTER PARENT!..you know, the people that step up when a parent either cant or no longer wants their child! I dont consider them "fosters"...both have been with me over 6 years, and though I am not the natural parent...they are mine and I am very proud of all my kids. Lets see,one daughter is currently in her second year of law school, another is finishing up her nursing degree,my son works for a local real estate company and my oldest has 2 beautiful little girls,by the same man I might ad(and who passed away last June),and she works for a local "box" store.
As one poster pointed out, it goes by "income"...as a family of 6, we would have to be making close to$60,000 grand a year to not qualify for our housing. How many of you high and mightys make that much a year? As for welfare, dont get a dime! When they are all out of school and on their own....I look forward to being off the program, but until then...we are staying put. And just an FYI....you would be amazed at where you can find "decent" Section 8 these days. It isnt all run down shacks and bad neighborhoods any more. But, that will be my little secret, because like you, I dont want the riff raft moving in around here either!
As for the comment.." landlords can get more for Section 8"...you are wrong! It goes by income and fair market value! Please do your homework before spouting off about something you know very little if anything at all about!
And on a final note, and I am sure you are all waiting with bated breath...white and proud of it!!!!
section 8 should be "run down shacks and bad neighborhoods" as Tracey says it isn't. If all those on govt dole were kept in one area(projects) the rest of the population would be safer and more comfortable.Remember,Cuyahoga Falls was nice until Prange dr was built
the chamberlain/kenridge area is the ghetto of fairlawn.
Tracey - just quit. You will never change some of these people's narrow minds. I read thier bigotry daily and they just don't care. You have much to be proud of! And a foster parent too? You are actually doing something to make a difference - unlike the jerks that get on here hourly and do absolutely nothing to make a difference in their environment. I think they must have pitiful lives and want the rest of us to be miserable too.
What? You thought you were safe in Fairlawn?
Good for you, Tracey! What does your husband do for work?
lets not forget that this story is about GUNS! and the stupid people out shooting others. i love guns, i love shooting (at the range) and would NEVER shoot anyone unless my life was in danger. People shoot People...!!!and those People need locked up...or maybe someone will shoot at them sooner or later. all around a tragedy!!!
I don't remember the article saying the shooters were on section 8......
It does touch on anger and crime perpetrated by a black male with a gun.
I never thought I would be agreeing to some of the above racial comments but I am against long term living in Section 8 facilities. As a retired Federal Gov't employee, I was taxed very heavily for whatever reasons and had to sacrifice a lot to live comfortable. Section 8 housing was not intended for long term living just a stepping stone until you could do better. I thank God i never had to resort to Gov't handouts.
Tracey, aren't you glad these ignorant disturbed people don't make the rules? Good for you for all of your accomplishments and extra kudos for having foster children. I think Sheila had her heart broken by a black guy, hence her rage and hatred. I think crackronite's wife left him for a black guy, and I think the majority of posters on here are bitter, frustrated, unhappy people. If you really want people to stop "sponging" off the taxpayers, you'd better get a degree and start trying to change some laws. Or maybe you can move to Iran. Most of you seem like you would fit in well.
WOW it is amazing how many people are not aware of the statistics. There are just as many whites on Section 8 and collecting welfare. Oh and don't forget how many white people collect and scam disability. Alot of landlords love Section 8 cause they don't have to worry about getting paid. I love the "High and Mighty" who never need assistance from anyone....those are the same ones that when hard times do hit them they usually will commit suicide after they've killed their families. "Typically White America"
My oh my. All this chatter. The entire Riviera Dr., Kenridge apts and parts of Chamberlain Rd., do indeed, suck. Section 8 is only part of it. Others are inhabited by multiple people who either pool together money for rent or simply crash on another's couch or floor. At least when these folks call the police in Fairlawn, they are not put on hold. My guess is no one from the party called the police as is was not a "cake and punch" kind of gathering.
i have no problem with section 8, but it needs to be in the correct areas. As said above, section 8 kills good neighborhoods. the Zahn/Thurmont/ area near firestone highschool is one example for akron. chamberlain/kenridge/riviera rd for fairlawn, and the martin houses for copley.
Well the "hood" has come to Fairlawn. No more homes or apartments there... it's "Where's your crib, man?" The thugs in Akron have to move up the social ladder too, I suppose.
@ Tracey:
Why have you had foster children for 6 years???? Why didn't you and your hard working self adopt them???Just another way to collect more $$ from our fine city. Your not fooling anyone, I was not aware that unemployed people living in Sec 8 housing were allowed to foster children. Might want to check with CSB as to the legality of that.
Hey, just one more foster kid and next year you can get the 26 inch spinner rims. Funny, not a word about where dad is. And a lawyer in the family might come in handy.Beats a public defender.
Guess what folks, Fairlawn is Akron. I helped build those apartments back in the early 60's. The guy from Calfornia remembers Fairlawn when it was farm's?
He'd have to be in his late 90's. I'm not 70 yet and
I don't remember all farms or even a few farms even as far back as the 40's.
It is terrible for people to have to live in fear no
matter where they live. I think were heading for another Civil War. People have to start working together to clean up this rif-raf low life scum that goes around beating and killing people no matter what their ethnic background. Aren't we all American's? Send them to the mid-east to fight and kill for the Country.
Folks...at least the older folks. Remember the love triangle that resulted in the shooting death of a guy on chamberlin rd. This guy was ambushed in his garage(long time ago).
My point, things can happen, anywhere, anytime by anyone.
Does every post has to be a racist comment. who are you people? it's 2009 already, stop basking in self hate, love yourself, then maybe, just maybe you will be able to love others.
Peace-Love-Happiness..
I just want to know why Black..yes ,I said it,extended families go to Hardesty park ,play rap,at high volume, allow their kids to run roughshod over all the other kids and leave garbage in their wake?
We love our Kids..just not enough to control them.
That is the stereotypical Section 8 mentality and why poor folks should be GIVEN a house to do with as they will ONCE.
Here is free housing ,now pay your own upkeep, utilities, taxes etc.and make a productive citizen out of yourself.
Shooting in Fairlawn by a couple of black thugs? Wow has Brown Street run out of targets?
Hey Bergermeister, You must be a young one. Sorry I left the comma out after RT 18. that's the highway number for Market St not the time I spent there. Your beyond help, just look around pal. I lived in that area from 1950 to 1965 so I know what was going on and visit friends on occasion and it has changed for the worse. A complete change in landscape, buildings and all. At least SkyWay and the Fairlawn Shopping Center is still there. Oh, that's the old name for the shopping center but you wouldn't know that.
Every time I read some of the comments people write i just have to sit back and laugh. It seems to me that whenever a crime happens or a thee is shooting, some people are quick to bring up race or say that Akron is full of thugs. Why do people still feel the need to be so racist? Im so glad that I decide to get away from the people like that. Man, these comments and post keep me laughing at all these people who like to sit up here all high and mighty trying to down grade the next race to make themselves feel good!!!
Counterfeiter is wrong. Akron has a higher crime rate per capita than cleveland.
Why are people afraid to say they were black?
Being politically correct is wrong.
Tell it like it is.
People are not being racist. Just stating the facts. Tell it like it is. Enough with the PC speech already.
People check out what happened to those beautiful malls, Rolling Acers and Randall Park Mall. I ask anyone to tell me what happened to those places and why?
why are my posts being deleted? They are not racist. I thought free was still around here.

sorry people. There was a delay and I thought my posts were being deleted.
POVERTY SUCKS!
In this day and age with all the free handouts and all the opportunity available, poverty is not a excuse. People can be poor as you suggest, but still obey the laws of the land. Just because your poor doesnt mean you have to shoot people.
Sorry but its 2009 and ive got a news flash for all of you uppity up people walking around with your nose in the air and your condescending statements and attitudes on akron, cleveland, etc...crime happens EVERYWHERE more places than some but everywhere, it does not discriminate, its not prejudiced nor biased its like a cancer eating at our society as a whole!
Angelo, Thats the problem. Its everywhere. But there are places where its more prevelent. Most inner cities and there is no denying that. Where are we supposed to go? How far should we have to retreat? Most of us have already retreated to our homes, yet the government is taking away our right to protect our homes. How many artilcles everyday is there that tells the story about a home-owner going to jail because he shot a intruder? I ask again. How far do we have to retreat?
Angelo, you make it sound like we should just put up with all the crime.
You may have a apathetic attitude toward all the crime, but I don't. The real cancer is people who say it is everywhere and get over it.
There is no denying the fact the crime ratios in the black community across every crime stat monitored by FBI data are much greater. It is only getting worse statistically. This statement is fact that cannot be disputed, not a racial statement. Numbers do not lie. So now the question is what can be done?
MaryAnn-
Are you a mnad fool? This type of behavior happens EVERYWHERE!!! Dummy! Booooo!
@ steve People check out what happened to those beautiful malls, Rolling Acers and Randall Park Mall. I ask anyone to tell me what happened to those places and why?
What has happened relates to my post above relating to facts statistically. The community then complains no one wants to invest in it when people are terrified to go there. What is the solution? Anyone....without race baiting.
@akronisdynamic -
The solution is to take an approach such as chicago did a while ago...push all the poor/section 8 etc to a diff side of town.
SECTION 8 need to go!! All SECTION 8 is, Is trouble!!! Burn the projects and stop handing out my tax dollars to some people that will never get off SECTION 8.
@Ms. Black Fantastic--A Gov't job is a handout. Most of the minorities that I know who work, work in a gov't job. Try working in the private sector where job security does not exist except for the performance that you bring.
@ akronisdynamic
you are wrong
you don't define an area by race
you define an area by the median income
and last time i checked there are more whites on welfare then blacks.
Residents with income below the poverty level in
Akron: 23.6%
Whole state: 13.1%
Ok...my husband died...any more questions on that one?...good,didnt think so...as for the legality of it all...I went through the courts to obtain custody of both children...one had been previously adopted and after discussing it... SHE felt it was not what SHE wanted!...and the courts agreed. My son was left to fend for himself while his mom hit the bars, bringing home whatever she could...he was friends with my daughter and when we found out was going on,offered him a home, security and love....and again, the courts approved.Further,as some fosters do collect from the state...again...I never took a dime of money..but yes, food stamps...so if that sticks in your throat, too bad!
I did this because NO ONE CARED ABOUT THESE KIDS!
not the money!
It is really sad how many are so quick to judge others WITHOUT the FACTS!
This will be my last explanation to you very pathetic humans...and I use that word loosely!
Even the wildest animal has some degree of compassion.
This is for Pam...where did you read that I said I didnt work?....and another FYI...just because they reach legal age, doesnt mean you stop loving them!...and forget all about them...geez!
@ andre
I am not sure your comments pertain to mine?
Walk softly, speak politely, and conceal carry.
pics or it didn't happen......
WOW. These comments...One poster is right about handouts and section8 forever.
I agree that people fall on hard times. I have myself. Welfare/section8 should be like unemployment. It should run out at sometime. Right now there is no reason for many on Welfare to get off. People on Welfare can get a free education and food stamps not to mention various other handouts. What incentive do they have to better themselves? For every kid they continue to poop out, they will get another few thousand a month on welfare. Nothing makes more angry than when I go to Giant Eagle and see someone drive away in a Escalade when they just paid for 300 dollars of food with food stamps.
Sheila,, just wait. Your president want to redistribute your income even more.
I ask again.
HOW MUCH SHOULD BE TAXED AND HOW FAR SHOULD WE RETREAT FOR OUR OWN SAFETY???
@akronisdynamic.
you are right. If anyone speaks up, it is race baiting.
I will always speak up and I will conceal and carry until Obama takes that away.
@Sheila.
I have family that lived years ago in North Hill area. They have been forced to Fairlawn area. They are now being forced out of that area now as well.
What is happening in the Fairlawn area happened to beautiful mall areas like Rolling Acres and Randall Park. It festers and spreads like a disease. Yet the government continues to cut police and secruity task forces. We are alone, and must protect ourselves with only the Second Amendment at our disposal.
In between my family also made a stop in Highland Sq. to live, then onto Fairlwan. You get the idea. Before to long we will all be living Iowa or the mountains. Then we will be called crazy people because we want our children to be safe from these parasites.
@ Tracey please don't argue with fools people looking from a distance can't tell who is who
If anyone is surprised this happened in Fairlawn, you obviously are living in the far distant past.
No imagineary border can contain the virus that is urban neglect.
oh and frizzle.. just because i cant tell you who the shooter was doesnt make me bad. But if you can, it make you privy to a murder.
@ steve please read my post a little slower maybe you might understand what im saying
ok frizzle. What dont i understand? I understand people are afraid to say whats on their mind here, but i am not sure what you sayin..
Sheila and Steve - you are both joking, right? Please tell me you are not real people. Anybody who can show me any legitimate proof that Obama did away with welfare reform, wins a prize. Where do you get your information? Unreliable is not the word. I hope for your sake that if you believe that garbage that you are getting a disability check for being mentally incapacitated. Steve - here are some facts - welfare checks are nowhere near a thousand dollars. Link: loc.gov/index.html That is the Library of Congress website with this amazing little tool called THOMAS where you can search all legislation, for those who want accurate information. There is actually a bill to take away the TANF (welfare) emergency fund. Also a bill to drug test those receiving welfare checks. Nothing about what Sheila said, cause it is not true.
ftw. read my posts a little slower there cowboy. Sheila said that Obama did away with welfare reform. NOT ME. As far as the exact amount of money welfare produces for kids that parasites poop out, I may be wrong. But i will tell you this. The money welfare gives for having more kids is proven to be enough so that parasites continue to have more, instead of going to school on a free handout. Get a clue you liberal loser.
@Nathan G. Sorry, you feel Gov't jobs are handouts. I worked my way up the corporate ladder, served my country in the US Army and so on. I retired last year from $108K per year. My federal witholding was far more than your take home. What's your stats, Loser!
@msblack
You are not the only one with holdings that are past insanity. Obama wants even more. Thats what socialist society is. I didnt vote for that. Did you?
Tracey & ftw -
Thanks for posting some informed thoughtful comments. I sure wouldn't want to be neighbors with some of the rant'n'ravers on here.
Steve - I addressed you and Sheila separetely. I have many clues (actually I'm college educated - where did you go to school?)I could give you the exact formula used to determine dollar amounts of benefits, but you wouldn't understand it. So what do you suppose the 'parasites' do when their lifetime limit of 36 months of welfare money runs out? Also, every participant must create and sign a self-sufficiency contract within 30 days of signing up for OWF; if they violate it, they are done. Sanctions are in place and they are rigorously enforced. You throw around the word proven as if it were meaningful to you. Show me the data and your argument might have some more pull. LOL @ your name calling. Is it possible for you to have an adult conversation?
@MSBlackFantastic: Ouch! I'm taking bets you don't get a reply for that one! Good to see someone stand up for their own hard work. Maybe he's lacking job security and is jealous of yours. I wonder how many minorities he actually knows. Probably between zero and one.
Second, you're right - jealously does have a lot to do with minority issues.
Drug testing every 30 days would secure the 'programs' life expectancy.
omg!! who really cares!! i will say we will never truly understand why people behave the way they do. I just hate how racism shows every single time theres an article like this. i can comment on an article without insulting. just be glad you were blessed with a better opportunity and situation which entitles you to look down your narrow nose and judge. Grow up already some of you sound really stupid like shelia. get a life
Tracey, may God continue to bless you and your family. Love and take care of them. The stuff these folks are talking is called, "life".
As for Mr "concealed carry". Make sure you have enough training, ammunition and insurance. Oh yes, you might want to have a small jar of vasoline on your person along with the gun.
Tracy is just exploiting the system. She probably takes care of special needs foster children which you can earn up to 1500 a month on. So she is making $36,000 a year, tax free, living in public housing.
Way to go Tracy. You are a REAL American.
@Steve
A poorly managed city like (Akron)promotes crime.
It doesn't matter where you go. Poverty and crime has no skin color.
Being The Meth Capital of Ohio doesn't help either.
What companies are fueling growth in Akron? Why are they a great employer?
There are no companies hiring in Akron. The very few that exist are mainly temp engineering or highly technical here and there jobs. The economy and jobs in NE Ohio are bad and Akron is the worst!
How to stop poverty? Birth control! Make having kids a licensed privilege. Must be married, working and able to support each child. Would stop over population and world hunger.
Sheila. You are wrong. There are no liberals in Fairlawn, just right-wing Republicans who own all the Section 8 housing. Don't you love THEIR family values?
I told all of you comfortable elite white and black people, (Mostly white though)that this plague of mindless teen trash is coming to a town near you. They have nothing left to destroy in the inner city. So maybe now when they invade you people's comfy towns you will be moved to do something other than go to your swank entertainment evenings and look down your noses at the rest of us.It won't be long before green and hudson completes the set with Fair Hood And Chapel hood.
I do not care about what color you are.....4 yaers is 3.5 too long. Its a stepping stone, not a crutch.
>>>>>That's about the equivalent of being the best prima ballerina in all of Galveston Texas or the most law abiding Mafia Capo!
”You missed the point that it could be much worse. There's crime in every city this size. Way less here than in similar towns tho.

No Dr. Pangloss, it is you who missed the point.
HUNTR, one of my occupations involves carrying.....part of the job, son. I KNOW what to look for, WHO to look for, and WHY there should be areas of concern.
Into vasoline, are ya?
I'm 68 and I do remember the intersection of Rt. 18 and Ghent Rd. in pre-Summit Mall days, mid 1950s to around 1960. There was a used car lot called Deak's Auto Sales right at that corner. As I remember about a mile from there down Ghent or out Rt. 18 there were still farms.
sheila, I second that.
when you tear-down south akron so the mayor (and friends) can make money, the roaches will scurry
Sheila, that was PRICELESS!
Fairlawns troubles began when they started bussing em in from downtown to go to Summit Mall .. DOWNHILL FROM THERE ON !!!!!!!!
I can already see the nickname....."Slummit Mall".
huntr, your line of advice on carrying leads me to wonder where you're going with the vasoline comment. Which leads me to ask just what do you use for a holster?
Can I have a section 8 housing complex in my neighborhood too? I want my property value to go down, also I would like roaming gangs of black terrorists too.
