Strickland pardons retired shortstop, dozens of others

By Associated Press

CINCINNATI: Former All-Star shortstop Leo Cardenas is among Ohio convicts just granted a pardon by the governor.

Gov. Ted Strickland's action means Cardenas' 1997 felonious assault conviction will be erased from records. Cardenas had broken out a man's car window and assaulted him.

Cardenas, now 70, says he was glad to have his record cleared. He says he's not a bad guy, but not perfect either.

His 16-year major league career includes his 1960-'68 run with the Reds, when he was an All-Star four times. He is in the Reds' team Hall of Fame and lives in the Cincinnati area.

Strickland on Monday granted clemency to 78 people, with 68 gaining pardons.
