Several people hurt in Akron crash

By Beacon Journal staff

Updated at 1:29 p.m.

Emergency personnel remain at the scene of an Akron traffic accident that injured several mentally disabled individuals.

Multiple fire and ambulance personnel were dispatched to the two-vehicle crash reported around 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Bartges Street and Dart Avenue.

Authorities say 12 mentally disabled clients with the Tarry House, which operates three facilities serving adults, were injured and taken to area hospitals. Two other occupants from a second vehicle might also be injured.

Akron-area hospitals were advised to prepare for the patients, whose injuries have been described as nonlife-threatening.

It appears the van carrying the Tarry House clients was traveling west on Bartges when it collided with another vehicle. The van flipped over in the collision.

Tarry House is a an affiliate agency of the County of Summit Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board.

Caution: Show Dogs on Board

I'd like to ask the people that put this on their vehicle if, when the show dogs are not on board, if the sign reads:

Caution: People on board

Babes - how do you know that no family is around to love them? Handicapped people are lovable too.

ladybug1 - I know - I happen to love my son very much, which is why I find none of this funny! I just meant the families were not at the accident and I know how scared they would be.

I feel badly too, Babes, because I'm sure these people were quite frieghtened. I'm confident the emergency personnel on scene were very soothing and comforting. Now don't all you regulars freak out because I said something compassionate !

First of all they are people, second it could be you! We are all handicap maybe not to the point that we need to be housed in group homes, but they could have been killed. People never think about how tragdies could be them, or a loved one of theirs perhaps your children even. Some of you guys don't have anything to do, but say hurtful remarks toward others what a wasteful mind.
