State workers this morning were replacing speed limit signs along Interstate 77 in West Akron and Fairlawn that allow drivers to zoom by at 65 mph.
This month, the cities' respective legislators voted to raise the speed limit from 55 mph for a stretch of I-77 north from Vernon Odom Boulevard in Akron to Cleveland-Massillon Road in Fairlawn.
The Ohio Department of Transportation did a traffic study that determined the higher speed limit would be appropriate now that the stretch of highway has been increased to three lanes.

I thought the government didnt have common sense?
Everyone OUT of the left lane! Slow pokes to the right!
What is truely sad about this issue, is that when the two lane road was engineered, it was a 70 mph speed limit, but it took a traffic study to make it 65. It was kept at 55 as a speed trap for revenue generation. Now, they will have to approve another speed trap elsewhere...
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
I wonder if the ODOT study took into account the fact that most folks already drive at around 65 mph on that stretch of road, and that raising the speed limit will likely increase the speed of the traffic flow to 70 or 75 mph?
Slow down,,,,,,Save your gas !!!
Well, if people go 75 mph, then it still can be a speed trap.
I'm sure all the donut-gobblers will be on full force this weekend just LOOKING for reasons to write a citation.
It's about time!!!
If people dpon't want to speed, then move over into the slower lane. Some people are still driving 45 to 50 mph on this interstate.
I don't think that anyone has ever gone 55 mph through there or anyplace else on the X-way. I would guess that the average speed is 65 anyway. Oh well, who cares, put up your sign and move on. Good luck.
I never knew that the speed limit in the left lane was twenty five miles an hour faster than the other two.
Just goes to show ya that ya learn something new everyday.
Outta my way.
Yay! About time. I drive the stretch from Montrose to Downtown everyday. Now I can go with the flow of traffic without breaking the law.
I ve never got a ticket on that stretch. I always got mine on I 76 central interchange to arlington.
Speed is less a factor in crashes than stupid. Unfortunately, speed is easier to enforce and lessens the impact (figuratively and literally) of stupidity. If we took driving seriously, we'd have no need for speed limits. The fact people routinely do things WHILE driving is a serious problem.
Is that what those little numbers on those signs mean?
The safest driving is conforming to the flow of traffic. If traffic is going slow, and you are flying like a bat out of hades, then you are the dangerous one. If traffic is moving faster than the posted speed limit, and you are trying to earn your citizen-of-the-month badge by driving under the speed limit in the left lane, then you are the one putting people at risk.
If you can't conform to the flow of traffic, stay off the freeways.
Boston Heights would never vote to raise the speed limit on OH-8 past 55 MPH. Macedonia also refuses to increase the speed limit on their stretch of I-271 over 60 MPH. It's about revenue baby.
