FBI says Falls man admits to making devices

By Phil Trexler
Beacon Journal staff writer

The Cuyahoga Falls man accused of possessing an assortment of explosives and firearms, confessed to making the devices during an interview this week with the FBI, according to court documents.

Mark Campano, 56, is incarcerated at an undisclosed facility in northeast Ohio after a court appearance Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Akron. He is charged with possessing unregistered destructive devices. Additional charges could be levied.

Authorities say one of the explosives erupted Monday night inside Campano's Center Avenue apartment, severely injuring his hand and sending two thunderous booms throughout the complex. Falls police and firefighters evacuated more than two dozen neighbors after discovering more pipe bombs, firearms and ammunition. There were no reports of others being injured.

During questioning by FBI special agent John Aske on Wednesday, Campano admitted he ''did indeed'' make the homemade bombs, according to federal court documents. That same day Campano was released from Akron General Medical Center and taken immediately into custody.

Neighbors have said Campano, a former anesthesiologist stripped of medical license in 2006, spoke openly of his dislike for government. Drug and alcohol abuse led the Ohio Medical Board to take Campano's license. He had lived in the Falls for about four years.

According to court documents, investigators located 19 ''destructive devices'' made of copper while searching Campano's apartment. In addition, they recovered 11 devices made of PVC piping along with fuses, pipes and caps.

The Summit County Bomb Squad and members of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were called to the scene to assist in the investigation.

Federal Magistrate Benita Pearson on Wednesday ordered Campano held without bond pending future court appearances. She appointed Akron attorney Donald Hicks to represent him. A phone message and e-mail seeking comment from Hicks on Friday was not immediately returned.

Federal authorities have charged the Cuyahoga Falls man accused of concealing an arsenal of bombs and firearms inside his apartment. Agents arrested Mark A. Campano, 56, after his release Wednesday from Akron General Medical Center.

Does he always dress like that? It looks like he's wearing his mom's nightgown. I wonder if he was cooking up the explosives in his Easy Bake oven?

I'm glad he messed up and got caught before he killed someone. This nut job definitely had very bad intentions.

Don't think for a moment that this is the only person who "wants hs country back", and thinks that a few home made bombs will do the trick.
Just go to any gun shop, stand around and just listen, you'll see what I mean.
May God bless us all

@ bibliophile

No he don't normally dress like that, I think that is his custom made bomb making apron handed down from Timothy McVeigh (Oklahoma bomber) because he want be needing it ever again. On other hand it could have been handed down from Ted Kaczynski (Unabomber) or Eric Rudolf. Both in solitary confinement in Colorado, allowed to see sunlight 1 hour per day. On a more serious side the Cuyahoga Falls Bomber mostly wore a long black coat winter and summer. I'm telling you I talked to him often and he was anti government, but not anti American. Mark but was one of those brilliant nuts. Loose cannon, over the edge. One brick short of a load.

The waitresses and I used to laugh when he would tell us he used to be an anesthesiologist. We just thought he was having a bad dream. Maybe a wannabe. He is almost giant size but not an ounce of fat. If I would have known his potential, I would have never laughed at him.

ingrown terrorist.he was anti government, but not anti American.no difference peopl always make excuses. In America the people are the government.Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

It's a dream to think that Americans are the government. The government, congress, and senators will not listen to any of us anymore. This Country is run by the richest of the rich, Rothschild's etc.etc. Presidents, Democrats or Republicans are puppets for the very rich. Sorry for the disheartening news.

Are you saying you forefathers was whacked. It has always been that way.Rich white men who didn't want to pay taxes to England.and they got the poor to fight for them.I am not dishearten.Thats why any person who is not rich and an Republican are fools.Where the democrates get their money from the people,Republicans get theirs from big business,Insurance co.(HINT)Opposing health care reform, opposed medicare,Giving $166 billion dollars subsidies to get into medicare advantage sence they could not defeat it,They now profit from it.Thanks to the republican congress (2003-04) Whether they are billion dollar sole-source contracts to Halliburton, Loopholes and other tax subsidies cut taxes for the 275 companies by $43.4 billion at $36 billion; Chevron at $189 billion; Conoco Phillips at $166 billion etc.But not one complaint from Lie Detector,Proud Conservative, overtaxed or others.

@ Stephend

We will have to agree to disagree. Bottom line I do not like some things that are going on in this Country now or when George Bush was president. I love America, no better Country now or ever, past or present. I'm not a government hater nor do I rail against her. Just not as happy with government, as I am with the best Country ever as I indicated above. Would I make a bomb or fire a shot at government, no,no, emphatically no. I won't even do harsh ridicule of government. There are worse governments right under our noses. Right now for whatever reason the powers that be (whomever) are hell bent on a socialistic run government. And before you jump to conclusions its not a Democrat or Republican issue. I detest socialism, Marxism & communism. I've seen what that's like, no thanks. Good day to you sir and I probably won't make another statement, as I respect you and your views.
