Friends of a longtime Aultman Hospital nurse and cancer patient are rallying to help her in a mighty and meaningful way.
''We are trying to raise enough money to buy hearing aids for a co-worker [63-year-old Linda Bagent of East Sparta] who lost significant hearing from chemotherapy and radiation treatments,'' Patti White of Canal Fulton writes.
''We are planning on selling jewelry, purses, baked goods and [holding] a 50/50 raffle at the event.''
The fundraiser is 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 12 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 4275 Lincoln Way W., Massillon.
Community outreach
Grateful thanks to the Women's Auxiliary of Akron Free Will Baptist Church, 1802 Eastwood Ave., for their community outreach.
''We made over 18 fleece blankets and took 100 new Beanie Babies to Akron Children's Hospital,'' said auxiliary President Dorothy Kelly. ''We also made 20 blankets for our shut-ins in nursing homes. And we donated $100 to Jan Householder's Giving Doll Inc. ministry.''
Spaghetti fundraiser
A spaghetti dinner fundraiser is planned to assist the family of Barberton's Marjorie ''Margie'' Chik who died Oct. 15 following a long battle with colon cancer, leaving her husband of 16 years, Joseph, and two daughters, 12-year-old Macey and 6-year-old Lilly. Mrs. Chik had been employed by Yoder Brothers and enjoyed scrapbooking.
The benefit dinner will be 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson United Methodist Church, 3409 Johnson Road, Norton. Cost is $10, adults and children 11 and older; $5, children 10 and younger. A basket raffle is planned at 7 p.m. (winner need not be present).
Please make checks payable to the Chik Family Benevolent Fund.
For more information or to donate a basket, please call 330-687-7645.
Food drive
Tallmadge Good Neighbors is sponsoring a ''Give Thanks'' canned-food drive 10 a.m. to noon today. Items will be collected from drivers as they traverse the Circle.
Dennis Loughry, school board member and Mosholder Realty & Homes employee, helped organize the drive and secure volunteers.
Restaurant fundraiser
Kudos for the recent fundraiser at Fleming's Steakhouse in which servers and bartenders elected to donate all of their tips over a five-hour period Nov. 22 to Haven of Rest Ministries Inc.
Bartender Ashley Ahlborn informed me that $1,620 was turned over from that effort.
Christmas auction
Pregnancy Care of Summit County a nonprofit in Akron
offering educational services, emotional support and material goods to pregnant women and their families is hosting its Christmas auction, its biggest fundraiser, 5:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Family Center, 610 W. Exchange St., Akron.
Some of the items up for bid at the silent and oral auction include the following: four tickets to the Dec. 30 Cleveland Cavs vs. Atlanta game (great floor-level seating, includes parking), a glider rocker and stool, hot air balloon ride, framed print of Cleveland Stadium signed by Don Cockcroft, and various Christmas gifts.
The $20 cost includes dinner, door prizes and a homemade dessert bar.
For more a reservation, please call 330-253-4071.
Holiday Toy Drive
Attention, Cavaliers and Lake Erie Monsters ticket holders for games Nov. 28-Dec. 15: You're asked to participate in Charter One bank's Holiday Toy Drive.
Fans are encouraged to drop off new toys in collection bins located at every entrance of Quicken Loans Arena.
At the end of the drive, the toys will be distributed to children through agencies such as the Salvation Army, ACCESS, Project ACT, JR Coleman Center, Merrick House, Boys and Girls Club of Lorain, West Side Ecumenical Ministry and the Phillis Wheatley Association.
Volunteers of the Year
A belated but very heartfelt nod to Summa Barberton Hospital's super volunteers Bill Mohn and Wauneta Richey, named ''Volunteers of the Year.''
Mohn, who has been with the hospital since 2004, has racked up more than 1,700 volunteer hours, doing two to three days a week in transport and as a mail courier.
Richey, who volunteers in the Parkview Center's mammography department two days a week, has logged more than 800 hours since stepping on board in 2007. She bakes for the bake sale and does whatever needs to be done.
Library worker honored
Special accolades for Ann Heiselman who was honored recently by the Akron-Summit County Public Library for 50 years of public service albeit paid to the community.
The incredibly chic 71-year-old ''started working as a student assistant at the Wooster Branch Library 1953-57,'' said Carla J. Davis, the library's marketing communications director. ''She was rehired in 1963, and has worked continuously for 46 years. She's worked full time for 11 now and 35 years part time.''
All the while she's been at one library location.
