Biographical background of UA professor Ira Sasowsky

UA professor’s career background

University of Akron professor of geology and environmental sciences Ira Sasowsky grew up in Queens, N.Y., and graduated from high school in Newark, Del.

After a year of undergraduate studies at the University of Delaware, he went to work in the oil fields of Wyoming, North Dakota and Montana doing “mud logging” (creating records of the wells’ borings).

He worked in the oil fields for 18 months, then returned to college to continue his geology education.

After graduation from Delaware, he received both his master’s and doctoral degrees in geology from Penn State University.

After a few years of consulting, Sasowsky began his career at UA 18 years ago and is now a full professor.

He and his wife, Kathryn, a senior lecturer in geology and environmental science at UA, have two children and live in Bath Township.
