Harry and Ann Farmer of Sagamore Hills, volunteers at Akron General Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service, were honored at the Medical Mutual of Ohio Outstanding Senior Volunteer Awards ceremony. The couple, ages 79 and 72, respectively, have been patient contact volunteers at the VNS Care Center in Copley Township for more than six years. VNS volunteer Mikayla Gregory of Copley received a Youth Appreciation Day Award from the Breakfast Optimist Club of Akron.
Matthew Ertle of Richfield received his Eagle Scout certificate from Boy Scout Troop 387, sponsored by the Richfield United Church of Christ. His project was to design and supervise the construction and installation of three benches at Revere High. He is a 2012 graduate of Revere High who is majoring in music at Muskingum University. He is the son of John and Kathy Ertle.
Education
The 2012 Hall of Distinction inductees for the North Canton Alumni Association are Kim Cooksey, a 1975 graduate of Hoover High, of Louisville; Lisa Warburton-Gregory, a 1976 graduate of North Canton High, of North Canton; the late Jesse McDowell, director of forensics at the high school; and brothers, the late Charlie Schafer, former North Canton mayor, and the late Eugene Schafer, president of the Stark County Pharmaceutical Association.
Casey Jon Davis of Stow received the annual Samuel Krugliak Legal Student Scholarship from Krugliak, Wilkins, Griffiths & Dougherty Co. LPA in Canton. He is a student at the University of Akron. Davis graduated from Jackson High School and Ohio Northern University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
Gwendolyn Szeligo of Akron is a new member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
Kristyn Shreve of Kent received the James and Dorothy Rinier Endowed Scholarship in Geography at Kent State. She also was inducted into Gamma Theta Upsilon, the International Geographic Honor Society, and received an honorable mention in the Graduate Research Fellowship Program competition sponsored by the National Science Foundation. She has two bachelor’s degrees from KSU. She is pursuing a master’s degree in environmental science on a scholarship at Miami University. She is the daughter of Gregory and Joan Shreve of Kent and Oxford, Ohio.
Jaimee Moeller received a fellowship to pursue a master’s degree in forensic science this fall at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is a 2007 graduate of Wadsworth High and a 2011 graduate of Bowling Green State University. She is the daughter of Fulton and Linda Moeller of Norton.

Sarah Meghan Harper of Akron, an associate professor of library science at Kent State, was appointed co-chair of the Virginia Hamilton Conference on Multicultural Literature for Youth, the longest-running event in the United States to focus exclusively on multicultural literature for children and young adults, and as a member of the American Library Association Council.
Malone University’s outstanding alumni are Joel Daniel Harris, Young Alumnus of the Year; Melisa Carr, Leadership Excellence Award; Tanya Hockman, Graduate Alumna of the Year: and Paul Miller, Alumnus of the Year.
Military
Marine Corps Pfc. Jeremy P. Krul, son of William J. Krul Jr. of Akron, completed the Basic Electrician’s Course. He is a 2008 graduate of Akron’s Ellet High School.
Air National Guard Airman Elijah R. Managan, son of Leon Managan of Akron, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2011 graduate of Firestone High School in Akron.
Army Pvt. Nicole D. May, daughter of Sherrae Skinner of Akron, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is a 2009 graduate of North High School in Akron.
Navy Seaman Apprentice Stephen R. Broadnax, son of Kimberly Broadnax of Akron, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2011 graduate of Firestone High School in Akron.
