Seven members of the Malone University Symphonic Band and Jazz Band were selected as members of the 2014 Ohio Private College Instrumental Conductors Association Honors Concert and Honors Jazz Ensemble. Three Akron-area residents were among those selected for the Concert Band — Jenna Beacon, senior business administration major from Smithville who plays flute; and Michael Ayers and Erik Barnes, both senior music education majors from Canton who play percussion. Josh Loar, a freshman music education major from Alliance who plays alto sax, was selected for the jazz ensemble. One hundred fifty students at the participating colleges and universities were nominated and 111 selected.
The Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges’ Ohio Scholars Program awarded 1,003 scholarships statewide to students enrolled in its 34 member colleges for the current academic year. Kent State alumna Judith A. Jones is the first honoree of the university’s Spirit of Women in Business Award.
Jones, a Canton native who now lives in Florida, was the first woman to receive an MBA from KSU in 1964. She also received a bachelor’s degree from KSU in finance in 1961. In 1999, Jones retired as senior managing director of Society Asset Management, a division of Key Asset Management.
Navy Seaman Apprentice Vince A. Broska, son of John D. and Anisa M. Broska of Streetsboro, was promoted to his current rank upon graduation from U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2011 graduate of Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls.
