The International Soap Box Derby’s board of directors has added five new members: Alan Brubaker, the current Summit County engineer; Jason Dodson, chief of staff for Summit County Executive Russ Pry; Michael Callahan, senior partner of Callahan, Greven, Riley & Sinn LLC; Gregg Mervis, president and chief executive officer of the Akron/Summit Convention and Visitors Bureau and John S. Knight Center; and Dominic Rizzo, vice president and general sales manager at Rubber City Radio Group.
Three Akron-area high school teachers received 2014 Excellence in Teaching Awards from the College of Wooster. Damien Chapman, a calculus and math teacher at Manchester High; Christopher Ilg, a vocal music teacher at Highland High; and Daniel Taray, a history teacher at Jackson High, were nominated by former students who are now first-year students at Wooster.
Copley High graduate Megan Smeznik received the Robert G. Bone History Prize at the College of Wooster’s 44th annual recognition banquet. She is a senior majoring in history.
Eighteen Lake Local School District educators were named master teachers by the Stark County Educational Service Center, which is promoting the Ohio Department of Education program. Holly Collins, Cara Eibel, Beth McAlonan, Jody McCulley, Erin Mengeu, Courtney Miller, Ramona Moore, Amy Nelson, Theresa Prince, Andrea Schafer, Julie Soduk, Jamie Stegner, Marisa Stropoli, Joni Susa, Kathy Tobin, Theresa Warnick, Kristin Williams and Renee Zehner were selected because they demonstrate leadership and collaboration and have excellent skills.
Malone University announced the 2014 winners of its awards for excellence. Receiving the Distinguished Faculty Awards were Kyle Calderhead, an assistant professor of mathematics, psychology professor David Entwistle and psychology professor Ebenezer A. de Oliveira. Kerrie Evans, an administrative assistant in communication arts, was named Outstanding Staff Employee of the Year. Provost Donald Tucker was named Outstanding Administrative Employee of the Year.
Fourteen faculty members at the University of Akron will receive $10,000 stipends to help fund summer studies. They are: Hazel Barton, biology; Heather Braun, English; Clayton Fant, anthropology and classical studies; Qindan Huang, civil engineering; Michael Konopka, chemistry; Peter Lavrentyev, biology; Oghenetoja Okoh, history; Linda Orr, marketing; Zhenmeng Peng, chemical and biomolecular engineering; Jordan Renna, biology; Huu Nghi Tran, electrical and computer engineering; Markus Vogl, art; Eric Wasserman, English; and Jiahua Zhu, chemical and biomolecular engineering.
Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Matthew D. Merzweiler, son of Lisa Merzweiler of Akron, graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio. He is a 2009 graduate of Firestone High School, Akron.
