Steven Jewell, medical director for Child Guidance and Family Solutions in Akron, received the 2012 Drs. Fred and Penny Frese Award from the Summit County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board. Jewell chairs the Ohio Psychiatric Physicians Association’s Government Relations Committee and is a member of the board of trustees of NAMI Ohio.
Kelly Price, director of sales at Rockynol, a retirement community owned and operated by Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services, is one of 30 young professionals to receive “30 for the Future” awards from the Greater Akron Chamber. The award honors young professionals between the ages of 25 and 39.
The Stark County Hunger Task Force recognized Mount Pleasant Church of the Brethren as Hunger Fighter of the Year; Hall of Fame Branch No. 238 of the National Association of Letter Carriers as Community Partner of the Year; and Alliance Community Pantry as Pantry of the Year during a Kick-off Gala event this month. Pastor Bruce Jacobsen and Julie Myers accepted the award for the church, Eugene Bradford for the letter carriers and Bob Shaffer for Community Pantry.
Several Malone University employees were recognized for years of service. Mark W. Bankert of Canton, associate athletic director and sports information director, and Karen R. Warner of Canton, assistant to the provost, received 25-year awards. Kathy L. Secrest of Canton, a bookstore assistant, marked 35 years; Janice L. Anderson of Canton, reference librarian and assistant professor of library science, 40 years; and Jack B. Hazen of North Canton, cross country coach, 45 years.
Education
A Wayne County school board member is among five people statewide selected to receive the Ohio School Boards Association’s most prestigious honor. Doug Stuart, a board member with Rittman Schools and the Wayne County Schools Career Center, was named a 2012 All-Ohio School Board member.
Six Akron-area students received $250 awards from the Catholic Order of Foresters to attend Catholic kindergarten through high school. The winners of the random drawing were: Jayley Steen, daughter of Scott and Karen Steen of Doylestown; Leanne Casserlie, daughter of Gary and Cheryl Casserlie of Cuyahoga Falls; Benjamin Renner, son of William and Mary Renner of Canton; Austin Marko, son of Lori Marko of Canton; Nolan Hannon, son of Andrea Hannan, Canton; and Alexis Black, daughter of Danielle Black of Canton. The fraternal organization awards more than $150,000 to students each year.

Navy Seaman Recruit Kaitlin E. Lagodich, daughter of Linda S. Lagodich of Stow and Dennis A. Mathieu of Cuyahoga Falls, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. She is a 2012 graduate of Stow-Munroe Falls High School.
Army National Guard Pvt. Dominic J. Wise, son of Sabrina Wise of Tallmadge and Dawson Wise of Akron, graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. He is a 2010 graduate of Tallmadge High School.
Air Force Airman Roni E. Choueiry, son of Elias Choueiry of Akron, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2011 graduate of Firestone High School, Akron.
Navy Seaman Ishmael H. Jackson, son of Belinda Jackson of Akron and Dennis Johnson of San Diego, Calif., completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
Air Force Reserve Airman Alexandria M. Colburn, daughter of Caroline Steiner of Akron and Donald Colburn of Streetsboro, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She is a 2009 graduate of Our Lady of the Elms, Akron.
