If Ohio.com, the Beacon Journal's Internet site, offered message boards on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, here's what would have shown up:
• ''Borrrrring! Another non-story by the Leaking Urinal. Why don't you guys find some real news?''
• ''I know somebody who works for the city, and he says Don Plusquellic is behind this.''
• ''I read this yesterday in the Plain Dealer.''
• ''I know a person who knows a person whose brother-in-law was told first-hand by an Akron policeman, or maybe it was a sheriff's deputy, that the mayor of New York City was seen by a neighbor hanging upside down in a tree, naked, next to a chimpanzee, eating a banana and drinking shots of vodka just minutes before the second plane hit the tower.''
• ''You guys write a whole story about a big attack and don't even tell us who did it? The usual third-rate reporting by a dying newspaper.''
• ''Your liberal rag is playing this up to make George Bush look bad. Did you really have to devote all that space to one incident?''
• ''Nobody is going to find the real truth here. The traditional media are in Bush's pocket. Google 'George Bush' and 'Twin Towers' and you'll see that Bush ordered the attack. It's a known fact.''
•''I knew we shouldn't have drafted Tim Couch.''
• ''You're a moron. It isn't Couch's fault. It's that stupid coach of his. He doesn't have a clue. I knew it the instant they hired him.''
• ''I feel sorry for the victims' families.''
• ''I don't feel sorry for anybody. All those people in the Twin Towers were crooked businessmen. I bought some stock from a brokerage firm that had offices there and it lost money. You reap what you sew.''
• ''Tim Couch doesn't have an offensive line. If you don't get enough time, even Bernie Kosar would be lousy.''
• ''I miss Regina Brett.''
• ''I'll bet Don Robart loved this attack because it shows how easy it would be to knock down State Road Shopping Center.''
• ''My cousin's friend's brother plays for the Browns, and he says Tim Couch is out every night until dawn snorting coke and shooting smack.''
• ''The Beacon Journal screws up again. I can tell from the pictures this is Chicago, not New York.''
• ''Channel 5 had this story last week.''
• ''This never would have happened if John S. Knight were still alive.''
And so on. And on. And on.
For those of you who don't have access to the Internet, we should probably elaborate.
Employees of the Beacon Journal write stories and columns that not only are printed in the newspaper but posted on our Web site. At the bottom of almost every story, we invite all comers to comment.
The idea is the same as with letters to the editor: To allow readers to express their own opinion, offer additional information, suggest changes or anything else within reason.
Unlike traditional letters to the editor, though, Internet posters don't have to use their real names — and most don't. As a result, the level of discourse is not always what it might be.
In fact, we get a remarkable number of Internet readers who delight in taking anonymous potshots at the people in the stories, the people who write the stories and the organization that distributes the stories. The comments often have little to do with the subject at hand. They often are factually incorrect. And they can be incredibly rude and hurtful.
Example? This was the second comment under a news story about a local man who had drowned just hours earlier, on July 4:
''That will surely put a damper on any holiday festivities. Wonder if he had 'the big one' before he hit the water??''
Here's another post on the same story: ''I suspect he was drinking and playing grab@#$. That's what happens when people are trying to be funny.''
Nice compassion.
Sometimes, the cheap shots get so nasty — and/or libelous — that management removes the whole discussion. That inevitably brings howls of protest from posters who — apparently with a straight face — accuse the Beacon Journal of depriving them of their freedom of speech.
Where in the First Amendment does it say a private business is obligated to give voice to anonymous jerks?
You want freedom of speech? Fine. Buy a printing press. Launch a Web site. Hand out fliers on the street corner. Say anything you want on your own dime and your own time. That is freedom of speech.
And if you do say absolutely anything you feel like saying, you may discover that freedom of speech is not absolute. Accuse somebody of criminal activity without proof and you are the one who could wind up in court.
In short, we'd all be better off if, instead of immediately hitting the ''send'' key after indulging your basest instincts, you would pause for a moment to consider what you're doing.
People who really want to change things for the better, rather than just show off, don't hide behind screen names and twist the facts.
If the Internet had been around in 1775, the fellow who said ''Give me liberty or give me death!'' would not have identified himself as ''Pat02.''

Love it, Dyer!
P.S. I'm not hiding under a screen-name when I post...just don't want all the wackos to be able to look up my info if they had my "real" name. Besides, I'd never post something that required hiding anyways!
You know what Bob, I only know of one person who comments on here as himself. If you are going to do a story like this why don't you do a good job. This is just a ridiculous attempt to get back at people who may not have agreed with some of the ABJ's reportings. I am not impressed.
And there he is! So funny! Who else is going to come out. Seriously, I want to know. It is so eas y to post anonymous.
"Sometimes, the cheap shots get so nasty — and/or libelous — that management removes the whole discussion."
The ~management~ removes posts that does not fit in with their political beliefs. Posts that aren't cheap shots, nasty or libelous. He whines about "freedom of speech," but what about "freedom of the press?"
Albeit, it may be a private business, however quit trying to pass the ABJ off as a legitimate, UNBIASED news reporting agency and admit you're slanted tabloidism. When you censor other points of views that oppose your political agendas, you certainly aren't preaching gospel, either.
Nice way of using the 9/11 tragedies to invoke a negative, emotional response towards all people who comment. I'm sure anyone who doesn't agree with dyer and the ABJ are racists, too.
Mr Dyer
As I have said on some responses to my posts
I think you could say
I Rest my Case
Every time I read an article written by Bob Dryer I get mad at myself... I realize I've just wasted precious minutes of my life that I will never get back... When will I ever learn???
I enjoy reading the comments more than I enjoy reading some of the stories. I moved out of Akron many years ago but still follow my hometown online; I don't need to read any articles about what Obama is up to, getting that news & info elsewhere, but I love to read the nutty comments about him (did you know he's a Socialist AND a Fascist!?!?)...
for a minute I thought Dyer was going to be the man who did some real reporting into the city's finances, or somehow expose how we got to where we are today. I hope this article doesn't show he's been slapped down by the editors. Although it is true that the comments section has resulted in the ABJ going back and clarifying things, or covering stories that were ignored when they happened...like,... uh...firestone park assaults.
Mr. Dyer
While I agree with you in theory, am I to believe that those comments were from 9/11?
By your statement the site didn't offer message boards, so are you just piecing together different quotes and not giving their context?
Also, what is with the timing of the article? Obviously these sort of things have been going on for a while, what struck a nerve now?
Could it possibly be that "city officials", No Names Please, asked for this....I mean I had Sylvester Stallion's mom read the bumps on my head (Phrenology, see some us do research) and I am not crazy....
Seriously, Mr. Dyer I usually enjoy your column as I hate left lane drivers as well. But to take pot-shots at "anonymous posters" and criticize partial truths, in a forum that equates to an Op Ed piece, while the paper you write for does the same is laughable.
Then again, "who is John Galt?"
I still miss Regina Brett.
These message boards are a melting pot of hate, lies, and misconceptions. I bet those posters wouldn't be so forthright if they had to post their real names. Spineless wimps.
like calling people "spineless wimps" under an obscure name
I read this somewhere sometime ago if I could just remember where I placed that...
Mr Dyer:
A serious question - isn't the complaint that politicians and others often have against the 'traditional media' the same as the complaint you have identified in your article?
In my life I've had the opportunity to talk with many individuals who routinely interact with members of the press - including the ABJ. Very often, they complain the resulting press articles 'have little to do with the subject at hand', are 'often factually incorrect', and can be 'incredibly rude and hurtful'.
This is not meant to defend some of the ridiculous comments on this board - but I would submit that the comments often simply represent a caricature of the original story in question.
oh bob good grief. do you want a tissue for your issue? We are private citizens, if we have inaccurate facts that is our business.
but you are (allegedly) in the job of informing the public and should have accurate information. and yet from this paper such ridiculous articles such as the layoffs not affecting the police protection of the city. we get the hard hitting questions like "Did you do this to get revenge on the police officers?"
if this paper doesn't want to be criticized then do some actual fact checking. call the officers, talk to their wives. don't just talk to the union head or the mayor. write some accurate facts and stop being a liberal whining paper. then maybe you might command some respect. and for pete's sake stop using this paper to write your whining columns about people being insensitive.
Bob, nice article. You've said what a lot of us have been thinking for quite some time. Maybe comments should be moderated. Apparently Mendenhall didn't read the whole article, as he's part of the problem (post unrelated to article).
Although Pat I don't disagree with most of your article, I think you are confusing nasty with just plain frustration by the citizens.
Most are tired of the continuing situation in Summit government, lies, wasted spending, crime, etc. The ABJ has layed off so many people that yes if you want breaking news you have to go to a source out in another city to find out what happened.
The people are tired of watching Akron crumble under it's own weight and nothing is ever done about it but raise taxes for more waste while gangs roam our streets beating up white folk and nothing is done about it.
Now most people can't sell their homes to get out of this mess and you wonder why all the anger ?
wile e coyote very insightful and well said. much of what you see on these blogs is truly a result of anger and frustration. and as I said before I am smart enough to know that these are ordinary citizens with an opinion. I don't read them with the expectation of being factually correct. (some I don't read at all). and lately I don't read the paper with any expectation that it may be factually correct.
{{instead of immediately hitting the ''send'' key after indulging your basest instincts, you would pause for a moment to consider what you're doing.}}
((chucklin')) I'd think this also applies to emails laced with salty language from columnists who get their feelin's hurt when called on a faux pas, Dyer.
No matter. Most of the folks here engage in discourse of one kind or another over a topic, and most of them are on topic. Far more than Dyer would admit, considerin' this column.
While part of this column is aimed at pot shots taken at the ABJ and it's writers, I'd remind them that they are not all knowin' and all seein' and should read the comments and re-evaluate their writin's and write corrections when items are pointed out to them.
There's no question the ABJ and it's writers play heavily in local politics, and engage in one-sided articles in support of the current leadership, while lambastin' any opposition.
But as Dyer has pointed out, the ABJ is a business which speaks as it wishes, facts withstandin'.
This is not a blog. The ability to comment on a newspaper article does not make a blog. You are not a blogger if you post here. Providing comments on a website, that is not a blog, does not make you a blogger.
Interesting point of view Mr. Dyer, but not necessarily a correct view...IMHO I see these message boards as an outlet for the common person to respond, add or admittingly detract from the issues of the day...call it a social experiment if you will, but I enjoy (for the most part) reading the various viewpoints (positive or negative)that those within my community express...thanks (so far) to the ABJ for offering this outlet !
Stop letting us post anonymously & require us to use our names.
Jeeze Bob, who p!$$ed in your Cheerios? The BJ would probably lose 1/2 of it's online readers if you eliminated the comments - they are often a better read then the stories.
...and the people Bob has criticized has posted dutifully and in order. Why am I not surprised?
I would be interested to see the tone change in posts if everyone used their real names..
#1) wow, they are letting us post to this one?
#2) Nice to see that we have a voice. i.e. bob dyer and the mayor reading our posts. (this retort, and the mayor not showing up for the wireless unveiling)
#3) check out today's dilbert. something about not stirring a pot of crazy
PS Remember bobby ohio.com and the comment section keep you relevant. If not for that you would be reporting on church bazaars for the west side leader.
So, the Beacon's official position is that we do not remain anonymous?
Who do I sue when a crazy shows up at my door?
I would never post anywhere anonymously!
Mr. Arfwoof.
"In fact, we get a remarkable number of Internet readers who delight in taking anonymous potshots at the people in the stories, the people who write the stories and the organization that distributes the stories. The comments often have little to do with the subject at hand. They often are factually incorrect. And they can be incredibly rude and hurtful."
but it's okay to take potshots at individuals if your name is at the top of the column? who's comments have little to do with the subject at hand? That are often factually incorrect? That are incredibly rude and hurtful? Your words apply to YOU Mr. Dyer.
Hahaha... if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.
Excellent article Mr. Dyer. You'd think I'd stop being amazed at the incivility of the posters here, but I continue to be shocked. I feel that that is starting to pour over into our real lives and people coming up in the internet age feel that they can just say anything they want to people and treat people any way they want and that's normal behavior. Just terrible.
Another fabulous fluff piece Bob.
You are right Bob. It's very easy for people to launch grenades hiding behind a keyboard and monitor.
But, I do agree w/ "I smell a rat". To many crazy@$$ people around here.
I KNOW A GUY WHO HAS A NEIGHBOR WITH THE LAST NAME "NOMONUOS", HE MARRIED A GIRL NAMED "ANN",
WHAT WOULD DYER SAY IF SHE POSTED USING HER REAL NAME?
Bob,
I wish you would have 'twanged up one of those sample posts in reference to a certain nemesis of yours. Now that would have been funny.
@Watching in Summit County parried:"We are private citizens, if we have inaccurate facts that is our business."
Dude - if it's inaccurate it isn't a fact.
And I will personally vouch for your innate ability to be inaccurate factually.
But I think this column was filler on a slow week. What happens here means nothing in the larger picture of anything.
Incivility isn't new, it's just empowered by anonymous communications - and I won't even go near the demographics of the posters, here.
So if you are offended, take your ball and go home.
another hatchet job by Bob Dyer. :)
Of course he is correct, not only are posters rude and annoying, many are outright liars. Others just post something to annoy others. There is some decent feedback at times, but after a while you know which comments to read, and which you just skip (ahem, Loren whatever-last-name).
I think that allowing posters to remain anonymous has some merit. It allows people to say things that they would otherwise keep to themselves. For example, a day or two ago, I posted a comment freely admitting to my own racist past and how it still affects me. I have talked about that with people I know and trust but never would post it on Ohio.com under my own name. I am not willing to extend trust to folks I do not know. I sometimes worry about the ugly comments posted on Ohio.com, I worry because I fear that some of those posting may actually believe what they write. If that is so, Ohio.com may be saying quite a bit about our community. That is disheartening.
The posts here, and people who keep returning to read and reply to them help raise revenue from banner ads. So in turn, we help pay his salary. I think this was a ploy to get more people -- who may read it in print, but not online -- to come see what the fuss is about. What he's being fussy about. Hide behind screen names? Whether it's email, a social networking site, youtube, message boards or whatever... 9 out of 10 if not more don't use their real names. So I guess over a billion people "hide" behind screen names. How old is he? He doesn't seem to know much about that fancy interweb thing.
If we used our real names HATFUL CHRISTIANS like Alan J would use their bible to justify hunting us down and killing us.
DragonLady, I do, too. I think she still writes for the plain dealer.
Christians are known for wearing hats?
Entertainment on a slow day is all it is....
interesting...
i do not post anonymiously - mostly because i was dumb when i started posting and used my name and never bothered to change it.
sometimes the comments are more informative than the story. I do agree that sometimes posters go overboard with uncalled for comments on tragic things - and i can understand sometimes that the Beacon decides to pull the comments.
I agree that poeple should stop before they hit send - but more to double check their spelling and grammar - it appears by reading posts that we have some very illiterate people in the area.
I actually consider some of the people on this site -"friends" even though i have never met them. Others that i may disagree with i still look forward to hearing their view on things.
i can always count on a something interesting from ARFWOOF, TOJ, Peebs, Godfather, I smell a rat, etc...
i guess my only response is if you don't like the comments don't read them.
@ TOJ - ((chucklin')) I was thinkin' the same thing, but only in the direction of local liberal hypocrites.
Well, the ABJ has finally shamed me into shutting my big trap!!! However, I still think the ABJ is a useless liberal rag.....but, eh, its the only game in town!
Man Dyer's really miffed about losing Tim Couch!
Hmmmmmm...deadline coming up! What can I write in my column today?.....I got it. Comments left by viewers on Ohio.com. Yeah thats it!
Skedge: What?????
I am a Christian and will be in Asheville this afternoon. When I find you, I'll be a Bible thumpin'. Just wanted to warn you.
It appears to me (and this is only my opinion, take it or leave it)that someone who has posted has hurt poor Bob's feelings and he's lashing out in fear and anger. I find that it's best to take the high road Bob, given your position. I do not appreciate his use of the events of 9/11. What a shame that in 8 years we've lost sight of what that moment in time did for all of us. It UNITED us, but it seems that Bob and a lot of us out here in NEO have forgotten that. I include myself in this group until I read Bob's rant. (Sorry to be off the topic a bit, but this stirred emotions)
You tell em, uh or us Bob! :o)
What is funny is the responses to your story proves everything you say in the story and these , er uhm, us people, continue to add are meaningless 2 cents anyway. HaHa!
And one person commented that the ABJ would lose half of their online readers if there were not these posts. My guess is most of these online readers don't subscribe to the written ABJ anyway, and so, don't bring any money to the ABJ. So who would care.
Bob Dyer must be just rolling around laughing on the news floor at the ABJ, enjoying the thick irony as his punctilious passel of posters posit their prideful, pusilanimous pontifications. Good Lord, sometimes folks just don't even realize it when they're squarely in the crosshairs.
Good job, Bob.
Every click on Ohio.com and every post on Ohio.com brings revenue to the paper via advertising dollars by third party companies. The printed ABJ is dying,to be replaced by the online version. Don't put it past the ABJ to write extremely one sided articles in order to provoke people to post.
@gain some more reality: This IS a blog. Blog has changed its meaning over the years. Get over it.
It's the mayor's fault! Recall! Recall! Recall! Recall!
What about all the anonymous city leaders always quoted in the ABJ 'news' stories?
Well, it is a shame this had to be said but apparently some people could use clarification on how these message boards work. The concept of the boards can encourage open discussion and, I believe recently, had something to do with Akron's message on a Veteran's bench being changed to something more appropriate. Unfortunately, too many posters aren't open to other perspectives and just want to perpetuate the name calling. That's when it becomes a waste of time to read the comments because they are all the same...and probably, from the same individuals. They are preaching to the choir, which makes them misleadingly think they have a lot more supporters than they do. I'd like to see more thoughtful comments. My 2 cents.
I find the comments more interesting than the articles. It is entertaining. The ABJ isn't much of a 'news'paper anymore. What happened to truly investigative newswriting? No indepth reporting happens in Akron's paper and with the mess Akron's facing, her citizens could desperately use facts and figures we could believe in. Only the gas rate reporting can be counted on.
@stleo, since one of my work responsibilities includes teaching about computer technology, I know what a blog is. This is not a blog.
This am example of a blog hosted by the ABJ: http://www.ohiomm.com/blogs/mcmanamon/
The ABJ website that includes the online version of their news articles is not a blog, just because it has a commenting feature.
My name is Becky, and I just wish they would let us comment on all stories, they pick and choose which ones they will allow comments on.
Thats my only beef.
But in his story he forgot one....here it is...
"Should have built a fence"
we see that one a lot, don't we? :)
Well, once again Bob's faithful readers have proved him right! It's funny, I was reading the comments to an article the other day, and couldn't for the life of me figure out how they managed to blame ___ (fill in the blank, whatever the article was about) on Don Plusquellic, the Repubs, the "Demoncritters" Obama and the government. I think someone even took a shot at nationalized healthcare. I take all of these comments with a grain of salt (or more) and when I see misspellings, typos, and poor grammar, such that I can't even follow the train of thought, I just quit reading.
Oh, I know, it was about Goodwill. Sheez, one lady goes dumpster-diving and everyone comes out of the woodwork about how Goodwill is evil!! Somehow, they are the reason we don't have proper health care!
You guys definitely keep me entertained. I have to believe this is the minority, or I'd throw myself off the Y bridge. I bet a lot of people would have a comment about my sobriety, intelligence, and mental stability if I did that!!
Maybe they'd even think I was a recall supporter!
My favorite are the paranoids who think just because their post doesn't show up immediately that it has been "removed" by some big "eye in the sky" - HIT REFRESH DIPWADS!
Well, Marco IS fat. That's a fact.
C'mon Bob. My post was removed? For what a little criticism of the Beacon? I don't post anonymously because I stand by every word. The bloggers are a good counterpoint to stories about how good $760 million in debt really is for our city and stories that tell us that police and fire layoffs won't effect personal and property safety.
I don't always agree even at all with Mr. Dyer's journalism, but I do think that folks on here making blind jokes or rude, crude attempts at some of these victims in the articles gets out of hand. Relatives who read our posts get personally involved an upset at some of the cracks taken at people. That is understandable.
But to be a publication who paraded out with anti-police articles reference the shootings to incite racial tension throughout the city? Too state what you said, Bob, then go out at recall time and PERSONALLY attack MissTia for her work and views involving the recall? I believe that is the pot calling the kettle black.
People receive many things from the comments section- information, input, opinions, statistics and most of all, humor. See, it is not as easy to laugh in this world because of stressors and pressure and the lack of free time. I enjoy coming home from work and hearing from the posters because sometimes, it is just funny.
Moderate the personal attacks, but otherwise, allow comments on all stories because it spurs dialogue and sheds light on the topic in more ways than by just reading what was written. Isn't GSMR the moderator for us all, anyway?
I THINK BOB DYER IS MORE INTELLIGENT THAN THIS ARTICLE INDICATES. COULDN'T YOU FIND ANY OTHER EVENT TO COMPARE WITH THAN THE WORST EVENT THAT EVER HAPPENED ON AMERICA'S SOIL? JUST SHOWS YOUR DISRESPECT.
Grace - true, he could have picked another story than that.
Bob - My guess is you wanted to make this so popular to see how many responses you get. I am guessing there is a pool going on right now at the ABJ to see if you can get the most posts ever from this article.
Yes, the ABJ gets money from advertisement and 3rd party companies paying for the ads. I seriously doubt thought that they pay that much. I mean really look at some of the ads. I wouldn't pay a dime for some of them.
Online news is the way of the future though. What will we all do, when some day we have to pay to be on this site.
Grace, you're missing Dyer's point.
I am LMBO right now. lol lol lol lol lol. Thank you Mr. Dyer.
Hey Becky, you're pretty hot. Do you have a website?
@ THINK: I apprecitate your honesty. I do recall some of your previous post, however, I have forgotten them until today because of your most recent posts. I don't even know if one of my responses to you a few days ago came through. But I said and I will say it again, I WANT TO BE JUST LIKE YOU WHEN I GROW UP.
Boston Fans Suck - Maybe she's not addressing his point, but she is addressing how Dyer has to use an American tragedy in order to try and make anyone care. Disrespectful and pathetic. Go back to complaining about how we have traffic laws, Bob.
Given the ABJ's declining revenues, you would think they would appreciate anyone logging into their website.

Hey Becky, you're pretty hot. Do you have a website?
much rather a phone number!
and to the others, this is NOT a blog
@deidre: "interesting...i do not post anonymiously - mostly because i was dumb when i started posting and used my name and never bothered to change it."
How do we know your name isn't Myrtle? Or Gertrude? Or Shaniqua?
Yes, BeckyJP1977 looks HOT! That's what we need on this site. Let's have more pictures of Becky and then the guys on the site will get distracted and not comment on the actual news stories.
Somebody remind Mendenhall that it is "NOT A BLOG"...as others have pointedly stated many times...it is a comment section...good lord that man is sooo out of touch !
Scottyboy - good point
Tawanda Lou
Truth Patrol, honestly, is that all you can come up with?
@Truth Patrol....LOL
Dyer,I still have a crush on ya:-)
Didnt we all have to put in our names and the like when we signed up for this post to begin with? So ,the Abj knows who we are.well those of us that didnt lie while filling it out.I,being one of them.
so if Bob happens to look me up id be happy to see him at my doorstep:-)
I liked Bob's story today. I do think he may have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed though. I like being anonomous. I enjoy saying "hey Slovensko, your comment is original "WOW". See I can say that cause I am anonomous. But I see you changed up today with "Sheesh". Just pickin on you Slo.
Not everyone on here is a natural born "blogger". Some may have the desire, but not the mechanical skills & abilities. Some lack the breadth & depth of language; others simply believe what they are saying, but in reality they lack a voice of thier own and a quality of their content. Lighten up everyone...it's just a BLOG.
''I know a person who knows a person whose brother-in-law was told first-hand by an Akron policeman, or maybe it was a sheriff's deputy, that the mayor of New York City was seen by a neighbor hanging upside down in a tree, naked, next to a chimpanzee, eating a banana and drinking shots of vodka just minutes before the second plane hit the tower.''
does anyone remember that post?
He didn't even put any of Loren or Gildee's on. - those are always great.
and he didn't mention any avatars which can be just as amusing as some of the comments.
way to further alienate your readers...bravo!
Werner, I can't believe they removed your post either. I'm surprised my post is still on. Keep up the good work.
{{{I THINK BOB DYER IS MORE INTELLIGENT THAN THIS ARTICLE INDICATES.}}}
That's debatable. He thinks that ever-buddy smarter than him, doesn't work and lives in their mother's basement. Plus he has a nasty habit of swearin' at folks. Not exectly what one expects from an award winnin' columnist.
But he is a wonderful traffic reporter. And an award winner too. So, with his assumptions of his betters aside, we should give him the benefit of the doubt.
This is all George W. Bush's fault....every last bit of it!
BTW, I agree with JustHad2Comment. I don't need all the internet whackos looking up my personal info and coming around my home because they disagree with what I'm saying. It is bad enough getting phone calls whenever I write an editorial with my name on it.
BeckyJP1977 IS hot.....
dyer maker
I like posting anonymously so that no one comes to my white town and throws rocks through my windows.
spd3333 - you don't write editorials. you write letters the editor
I post anonymously because I can. I say what I say because I see crime and democrats destroying the city.
Dear Bob, are you lacking material to write about? no...round'about or traffic sign ..to get us all hyped up over ? i prefer the comments over your article any day of the week
Amen Mr Dyer
AMEN!
@ Jason12 - probably would have been calling my home about now if I left my name on this site.....point made!
I think it was in poor taste to use 911 as a reference , on top of that when 911 occurred you wouldn't be reading in the ABJ till the next day, so most of those comments wouldn't have been written in the first, really bad example.
This also seems to be a " Bite The Hand That Feeds You. " article, since many update stories were based on complaints by these very same commenter's.
Keep that resume updated, Bob. You are obviously on your last legs.
Bob Dyer,
You are BRILLIANT and "spot on" regarding most of the posts out here on your website!!!
I think it is FANTASTIC that you finally called out this circus for what it is; and it is going into print!!!
:0)
P.S. - We ALL apologize for Beta"min"! We, at the very least, owe you that much!
;0)
You suck, Bob!!
If anonymous posting are so wretched, then made them otherwise. Anyone who wanted to find out who I am can figure it out by reading my posts and looking up my name in the phone book--not too hard to figure out. Bob is just having fun because the paper version of the ABJ isn't interactive like Ohio.com.
Bob,
I have always enjoyed your columns and this one is hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing. Thank you!
Well for my two cents, LOL. I agree a lot with what you said in the article. What I want to know is, what is the difference between a commentor posting anonymous or a journalist refering to an anonymous source. It happens everyday in the media and politics. There are enough people posting now that try to stray off topic and turn articles into personal attacks. If people posted their real names on here, I'm sure there would be some people on here that would look up information on the person posting and try and take away from the topic. Since none of us are perfect, even though some on here seem to think they are, it would be easy to turn the conversation into personal attacks. People need to stick to the topics instead of trying to belittle other people and making it personal. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and of course not everyone has the same opinion.
Good one Bob way to go!
By the way my name is Ned Parks and I like your column and what you print and agree with you on this.
Have a great day and keep up the good work.
The benefits to the Beacon obviously outweigh the costs here. Otherwise, they would have done away with the message boards a long time ago.
I think most people share my sentiment that I don't want some nutjob hunting me down because of something I wrote on here.
The Beacon either needs to better moderate the comments and remove posts that cross the line or else get over it.
Know what ticks Dyer off? A good number of us could easily do his job. Back in the day, journalists had to actually dig for information, be connected to the right sources, and substantiate their information before a story was printed. With the internet, all of it is available to everyone, and I could do a story on the sex life of a hummingbird if I had to. So, I guess we're all just Dyer-wannabes...which is fine. We post and go to our jobs, and I haven't seen any headlines reading: "Dyer loses position, replaced by some anonymous schmuck". You're safe, Bob. Relax.
One more thing. Tasteless posts are recognized as exactly that. We read them, we wonder who would be so crass, then we chalk it up to society. And is it any wonder that folks are so skeptical and venomous? Gee, could it be that all forms of current media, with their desire to be 'first with BREAKING NEWS', adds to our desire to lampoon it?
I guess we should all be at work!
oh wow. i have not read anything lately i have agreed with more! kudos, bob. way to say what should've been said alllll along. people are too quick to be sharp tounged around here.
To all annoymous posters and the beacon journal staff:
I would have asked "what was donald rumsfield saying Septmeber 10th 2001?"
Did the Beacon Journal run an article, on the war declared by the then secretary of defense?
Could september 10th and 11th be related?? What do you think??
Great article, Bob!
This article really brings out the truth about the rag we call a newspaper. They are not unbiased as they should be. Why not let the negative posts alone. Why try to sway the public by eliminating the posts that don't agree with the paper's or the mayor's standpoint.
We as citizens have to put up with this because it's the only game in town. Too bad someone doesn't recognize the opportunity to start a real newspaper in Akron. Can you say competition?? It sur wouldn't last long, would it?
all the ABJ is to promote the Libral Agenda and our Mayor. Article after article. You Akron area lemmings drink the Kood Aid daily. This is not a Newspaper Bob, but a propaganda rag, and it's so blatant. i say kudo's to you and your minister of misinformation given daily to the general public.
Bob this is directed straight to you: why don't you man up, and actually do an in depth article about the city hall hero and and the financial shape of Akron? I have asked you on here many times. There are no straight answers coming from anyone. Not the mayor, city hall or the ABJ. Heck, i doubt the union leaders are being totally honest either. You have a great chance here, lets see how you and the ABJ roll with it.
Pretty good read Bob, And I think Ohio.com does a pretty decent job of providing EVERYBODY with a free pass to voice their opinions, good or bad.
AS long as I continue to remain anonymous, there is something I'd like to come clean on.
Many years ago, when I was in my 20's, my buddy and I were following the Mayor and Marco while we were golfing at Good Park. In the distance I saw something drop from the bag of one of them. I could not tell who's property it was because the bags were very close to one another. Anyways, when we arrived to that area I found the item. It was a nearly brand new, beautiful Firestone CC golf towel.
Proper protocal would be to give it back when we caught up to them later or to turn it in at the clubhouse.
Well, its now years later and the towel is still looking great on my staff bag. I would like the party who suffered this loss to know that I am truly sorry and I still feel guilty today by my choice to not do the right thing and give it back.......
But not that much.
Wow, that felt good ! Thank you Ohio .com.
Well, Since we are coming clean, i don't wear any underwear.
Blog=weblog: is a type of website, usually maintained by a regular source, with regular entries.
ok now that we are all coming clean.
There are many times that my friends and I sit around with a couple of cold ones and laugh our *** off reading the stuff that "EducatedOne" types. We picture this person sitting in the day room of the psych ward with his tin foil hat and rabbit ear antenna trying to keep the government from reading his mind!!
Ha ha, I'm guilty of that crime myself.
The only people I know on here who use their entire names are Warner Mendenhall & Loren Eberly...'nuff said
I don't even read the stories anymore, just the comments. At least I get both sides of a story that way.
@Akroudy: Can you translate EducatedOne for us?
@Dduckster..LOLOLOL
Hey did you know if you take a pack of unsweetened Koolaid and poured in your toilet and let it sit for 5,then brushed it you wouldnt have to buy any Ti-d-bowl? it works better than people on here having to drink it :-)
Boo, this article reaked!!
wow this comment section is like a whose who of internet trolls, racebaiters, and all around general wackadoos that inhabit ohio.com.
That article was like the cops sending letters out to wanted fugitives that they won a prize and just need to show up and claim it.
Bob writes a fluff piece on our inane rantings and we all piled in to comment.
classic...
we all just got trolled.
publius
common sense was written by "an englishman"
ohhhhh boy......
Welcome to Crackron!!
Dyer smokes crack and I don't care.
The ABJ should follow Dyer's words and print the name of writer of the "editorials". Who wrote "Blue Fog"? That was clearly a fluff piece for the mayor.
@reality2electricbogaloo.....is this the ABJ version of getting Rick Rolled?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0
Reality 2 electric bogaloo....That was funny.
I thought the more that I read this article, the less funny it would become. NOT. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL.
