DAYTON, OHIO: The FBI is working with Dayton police in the investigation of the shooting of a bus driver who said a biblical book in his shirt pocket helped stop two of the bullets.
FBI spokesman Rick Smith said Wednesday that agents will help determine whether the shooting was a hate crime, a federal civil rights violation. Police planned a press conference Wednesday afternoon.
The 49-year-old driver told police he was outside his bus early Monday when three men shot at him three times, with one bullet hitting his leg. He was stabbed in the arm. He is expected to recover.
Rickey Wagoner, who is white, told police he heard one of the three black men saying they were there to “shoot a polar bear” — street lingo for a white person.
