Gov. Kasich signs Columbus schools plan

Associated Press

COLUMBUS: Ohio Gov. John Kasich has signed a bill allowing levy proceeds to be shared with charter schools that partner with the Columbus school district.

The measure also authorizes a November ballot issue creating an independent auditor for Columbus City Schools. That person could review district reports and data and initiate probes into suspected fraud, abuse or illegal activity.

The bill comes on the heels of attendance-tampering allegations leveled against the school district, allegations that Ohio Auditor Dave Yost is investigating.

Kasich, a Republican, appeared at Monday’s bill signing with Democratic Mayor Michael Coleman.

Some demonstrators gathered outside the event expressed opposition to the measure, while others criticized Kasich for abortion restrictions contained in the state budget.
