A woman's screams scared off a neighbor who had forced his way inside her apartment early Tuesday morning and threatened her with a knife, Summit County authorities said.
Joshua Cowell, 35, a registered sex offender, is being held in the Summit County Jail on charges of felonious assault, kidnapping and aggravated burglary.
Sheriff's deputies say Cowell broke inside a neighbor's apartment on East Nimisila Road about 1:30 a.m.
Cowell confronted the 33-year-old woman in her bedroom and threatened her with a knife, ordering her not to scream.
She ignored his demands and screamed, prompting the intruder to flee.
The victim then called 911, and deputies found Cowell in his nearby apartment.
Officials did not disclose the extent of the woman's injuries.
According to county court records, Cowell pleaded guilty in 1999 to gross sexual imposition and abduction involving a young girl.
He was sentenced to two years in prison and was required to register his address with the sheriff's department for 10 years following his release.
