Traffic began moving again Friday afternoon following a crash on Interstate 71 near mile marker 149 that brought motorists to a standstill for hours on the heavily traveled corridor between Cleveland and Columbus.
The Ohio Department of Transportation reported that the closure occurred south of S.R. 95, near Mount Gilead. Eyewitnesses said hazardous materials crews and medical evacuation helicopters were sent to the scene.
The disruption dismayed Akron-area travelers heading to the Columbus area for state baseball and track competitions, with uncertainty hanging over whether event start times would be postponed to accommodate athletes held up by the delay.
