Portage Country Club was transformed into a James Bond movie set with “For Your Eyes Only,” the annual Akron General Medical Center gala.
More than 400 people gathered for the benefit, which helped to raise more than $100,000 for the new Neuroscience Institute at the hospital. The event, sponsored by the Akron General Women’s Board, honored the late Dr. Kamel Muakkassa.
His wife, Rola Muakkassa, spoke to guests. Many of his family and friends were there, including brothers Dr. Farid Muakkassa and Dr. Wael Muakkassa and friend Tony Debs.
David and Claudia Smith attended since Claudia worked for Dr. Muakkassa for more than 17 years. This year’s chairwoman was Karen Horattas, who greeted guests with her husband, Dr. Mark Horattas.
Committee members included Laurie Felton, Diana Farro, Dr. Andy Fenton, Dr. Tim Stover and his wife, Lori Stover, Janine Patterson, Jo Bethea, Cheryl Levanduski, Sharon Honroth, Becky Callaway, Elaine Sisler, Alice Dickey Toby Gorant and Rola Muakkassa.
Giant glowing martini glasses decorated each table. Kevin Green and his business associate, Glen Stephens, attended. Green said he was hoping to play some blackjack. His strategy was simple: “Just don’t get too greedy.”
Sharing a table were Nikki and Steve Hawk, Dick and Maureen Kiko and Shaun and Jennifer Sweitzer.
“We are enjoying a night out without the kids,” said Kristin Hartzell, attending with husband Bret.
Dr. Ann Leano and her husband, Michael Brady, also were happy to have a night out.
“We like the sparkle of the evening,” said Kris Rutledge, attending with husband Lee.
