Safety meeting
AKRON: The Arlington Neighborhood Association will host a meeting Monday to help educate the public on how to survive an armed intrusion of a workplace, home or school.
Brian Vandersall, member of the Ohio Volunteer Corps, will lead a presentation based on Lt. Col. David Grossman’s lecture series on how to deal with an active shooter. The Homeland Security movie Run, Hide, Fight will be shown.
The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Arlington Church of the Nazarene, 1057 Triplett Blvd., Akron.
There is no cost to attend.
Participants are asked to bring a nonperishable food donation for the church’s food pantry.
Pizza shop robbed
AKRON: Workers inside an Akron pizza shop were robbed during Sunday’s Super Bowl.
A masked man carrying a handgun went inside Little Caesars, 2321 East Ave., about 10 p.m., walked behind the counter, pointed a handgun and demanded cash, police said.
The robber shouted, “Give me the money” and forced the two workers to gather money from the shop’s safe, two cash registers and from their own pockets.
The employees, a 46-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man, were not harmed, police said.
The robber left with an undisclosed amount of cash and the wallet of the male worker.
Police say the robber is an unshaven white man in his 30s. He wore a black sweatshirt with an eagle logo on the chest and a wing design down the sleeves, blue jeans and yellow and brown Timberland boots.
Driver confronted
AKRON: A Chinese food delivery driver was robbed at gunpoint late Saturday night in West Akron.
The driver, 35, was not injured.
The worker for China Star Restaurant told police he was sent to a home in the 1200 block of Cordova Avenue about 10:30 p.m.
After no one answered the door, the driver returned to his vehicle, where he was confronted from behind by a man armed with a handgun and demanding cash, police said.
The gunman fled after the driver surrendered about $70.
Shots fired at home
AKRON: A Canton man was arrested Monday morning on charges that he fired several gunshots into an occupied Akron residence.
No one was injured in the shooting that took place about 3 a.m. in the 200 block of Denver Street, police said.
Allen Trent, 38, of Canton, was arrested shortly after the shooting.
Police said the homeowner identified him as the shooter.
Trent is being held in the Summit County Jail on charges of felonious assault, discharging a firearm into an occupied structure and illegal possession of a weapon.
The homeowner told police that Trent came to his home and began firing gunshots into the house. No motive was released by police.
Trent fled before Akron officers arrived, police said.
Canton police found and arrested Trent and turned him over to Akron officers.
Bank robbed
AKRON: Akron police are investigating the robbery of a Kenmore neighborhood bank Monday morning.
The robber entered the FirstMerit branch at 1060 Kenmore Blvd. about 10:30 a.m. and handed the teller a note demanding cash. No gun was seen, and no one was injured.
The culprit ran north from the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.
The man is described as black, in his 30s, standing 5 feet 7 inches tall, and weighing about 180 pounds. He wore all black clothing, including a knit hat, pea coat, hooded sweatshirt, pants and gloves.
School open house
AKRON: The Lippman School will host an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.
The school, at 750 White Pond Drive, welcomes boys and girls in grades K-8 and is enrolling for the 2013-14 year.

Ward 4 meeting
AKRON: Russel Neal Jr., the Ward 4 councilman, will have a ward meeting at 6:30 p.m. today at Lawton Street Community Center, 1225 Lawton St.
Akron school board members Jason Haas and Bruce Alexander will discuss the recent sale of Central-Hower High School and the scholarship fund that was established. Newly appointed Planning Director Marco Sommerville will share his vision for the Planning Department.
GREEN
Arrest in thefts
GREEN: A 28-year-old man from the Youngstown area was arrested Saturday morning as a suspect in break-ins and thefts from as many as six vehicles in Green.
Timothy Hicks Jr. of Struthers was arrested about 7:30 a.m. when Summit County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about thefts from cars that had taken place over a two-day period.
When the deputy arrived, he saw Hicks carrying a black backpack near the woods on Koons Road. Hicks ran into the woods when confronted, and the deputy pursued him on foot, according to the sheriff’s office.
During this time, other deputies were setting up a perimeter around the area.
Hicks was located after a 2½-mile foot pursuit.
He was carrying property from the vehicles when he was apprehended, deputies said.
Hicks, who was absent without leave from Oriana House, was charged with theft and obstructing official business and taken to Summit County Jail.
He is also considered a suspect in numerous other burglaries in the city of Green, the sheriff’s office said Monday.
Future charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
KENT
Robber sought
KENT: Kent police are looking for the masked man who robbed a tanning salon Friday afternoon.
In a news release issued Monday, police say the unidentified man went inside Darque Zone Tanning, 1720 E. Main St., about noon Friday and told workers he had a gun.
The robber was given an undisclosed amount of cash from a register and then left the salon in a black Mazda 6 sedan.
MEDINA COUNTY
Damage extensive
LODI: The Medina County District Library is redesigning its Lodi branch with work expected to last until spring 2014.
Part of the library has been closed for more than a year because of structural damage and to allow a study to determine who is responsible for design flaws.
“The problem is the result of defective design, materials and installation,” a library news release said. “Responsibility for these defects lies with many companies involved with the project, but the Library Board is not responsible.”
The library said it is seeking legal advice “to pursue those responsible for the defects to recover the expenses incurred to make the necessary repairs.”
A portion of the library remains open.
School searched
MEDINA: Claggett Middle School in Medina was locked down for about an hour Monday morning after a student found a .22-caliber bullet in a hallway.
Law enforcement and administrators conducted a search and found nothing else of significance.
Students remained in classrooms during the search.
NORTH CANTON
College loan fund
NORTH CANTON: Students who live in the North Canton school district and plan to attending college or technical school as an undergraduate student are eligible to apply for a loan up to $3,000 annually from the North Canton Student Loan Foundation.
Applicants must maintain full-time status and good academic standing.
Loan applications for the 2013-2014 academic year are available in the guidance offices at Hoover, Central Catholic and St. Thomas Aquinas high schools.

Gibbs meeting
U.S. Rep. Bob Gibbs will have a town hall meeting Wednesday evening.
The meeting will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at 35700 Brainbridge Road in North Ridgeville in Lorain County.
Gibbs, R-Lakeville, represents the 7th District, which includes part of Medina County and most of Stark County.
