Akron woman killed in two-car crash in Wayne County

Beacon Journal staff report

A 48-year-old Akron woman died Friday night in a two-vehicle accident in Wayne County’s Milton Township.

Patricia A. Hopkins was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident on state Route 585, south of Pleasant Home Road, at about 9:30 p.m.

The Wooster post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said Hopkins was the right-front passenger in a vehicle driven by Michael P. Keeran, 33, of the same address in Akron.

He was southbound on state Route 585 when he drifted onto the right side of the road and lost control, the patrol said.

He overcorrected, went left of center and was struck on the passenger’s side by a northbound vehicle driven by Matthew T. Perry, 23, of Smithville, the patrol said.

Hopkins was pronounced dead at the scene and was taken to the Wayne County morgue. Keeran was transported to Akron General Medical Center.

Because of the severity of the impact, Hopkins and Keeran were trapped in the vehicle and fire personnel had to use rescue equipment to reach them.

Perry was transported to Wooster Community Hospital with minor injuries.

The state patrol said that driver inattention and the ice- and snow-covered berm were factors in the crash. All occupants were wearing seat belts.

The crash remains under investigation.
