John A. Burke of Medina received the Lamb Award from St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Medina for fostering spiritual growth and increasing the use of Boy Scout programs in the Lutheran Church. Burke is an organist at the church who has been involved in scouting for more than 40 years and is assistant scoutmaster of Troop 501.
Ranger Josh Bates of Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a Midwest regional winner of the prestigious Freeman Tilden award. He will compete for the national award from the National Park Service. The winner will be announced in mid-November. Bates was recognized for his work as the first volunteer liaison/service-learning coordinator.
Nine individuals and one group received top honors for volunteering in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Local adult winners were Tim Britton of Stow, Dan Krieger of Northfield, Jancie Newhouse of Silver Lake and Gene Stepanik of North Royalton. A youth winner was Brianna Machuga of Cuyahoga Falls. David Kopkas of Brecksville and Kevin Tuttle of Akron were winners in the Enduring Service Category. In the group category, winners were Gerry and Ann Findlan of Oberlin and the CVSR Volunteer Association headquartered in Peninsula. Those winners will now compete regionally and nationally for the National Park Service’s George and Helen Hartzog Awards for Outstanding Volunteer Service.
Gov. John Kasich reappointed Dr. Chander M. Kohli to the Northeast Ohio Medical University. He is board vice chairman. Kohli operates a neurosurgical practice in Youngstown.
Denison University senior Aaron Bennett of Hudson was named a Senior Fellow of Philosophy.
The Canton chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants awarded scholarships to Meagan Shoop of Stark State College, Grace Bowers and Bethany Horrell, both of Ashland University.
