NORTON: The Norton High School marching band finished third in its class at the recent 2012 Bands of America Grand National Championships at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
The 115 Norton band members competed against 22 other bands from schools with up to 600 students.
The Norton band also was chosen as Outstanding Visual Performance in its class.
A total of 87 bands around the country entered the competition.
“The students have put in the time and made the sacrifices over the year to produce an extraordinary product,” band director Tom Chiera said in a recent interview.
One of the school’s drum majors, Amber Goodwin, a 17-year-old senior, said the band worked hard all year. Coming in third place left her “overwhelmed by pride, but beyond that, I’m still stunned.”
Another drum major, Taylor Goch, an 18-year-old senior, said she was thankful to have had support from parents and staff all year.
“It’s hard to fathom the band made history” in Indianapolis, she said.
The overall Grand National Champion this year was Carmel (Ind.) High School. Two other Indiana schools finished ahead of Norton in its division.
