AKRON

Paper company fire

AKRON: A Saturday morning fire in the 100 block of North Summit Street caused an estimated $110,000 in damage to a River Valley Paper Co. building and its contents, city fire officials said.

The fire alert came at 6:24 a.m. from the building’s sprinkler system, and firefighters had the blaze under control at 8:20, Akron Fire Lt. Kerry Briggs said.

Nobody was inside the building at the time, and there were no injuries to firefighters, Briggs said.

Fire Capt. Dave Hull said the fire apparently began near bundled bails of recycled paper in the rear of the building.

Deputy Fire Chief Dale Evans said there were no strong suspicions of arson.

“[It’s] still under investigation. It’s a place that, just by the nature of its business, has quite a bit of material inside. So it’s going to take us a while to sort out what might have happened there,” Evans said.
