COLLEGE: Ohio State University
“Yes, I go to McKinley.”
Sooner or later, this question finds its way to me. Seemingly no matter where I am, it never fails.
Canton McKinley Senior High has a very rich history — and it’s something many in Canton are proud of. Whether it was our scores on the football field, or our national speech champions, nobody criticizes McKinley’s past. However, as of late, McKinley Senior has garnered a new reputation full of every sort of negativity.
As an incredibly proud Bulldog, I can’t seem but to feel confused when certain people don’t believe I go to McKinley. To them, it was as if a student who was competing at their level at their speech and debate tournament couldn’t possibly be from McKinley. Or that somebody like me would “fit in” at McKinley. But yet, here I am. A McKinley student who succeeds both academically and in extracurricular activities.
At McKinley, I have been offered an enormous amount of opportunities. From the staff, to the lessons, to the activities, McKinley has never let me down and never failed to keep me challenged. My future as I head toward college has been defined by the opportunities that McKinley offers to every student.
But why then are students all around this region confused about my Bulldog pride? I feel as though too many persons are only focusing on purely the negative aspects of our school. Yes, it is an urban area. Yes, I know our town isn’t as “well off” as others. But that doesn’t determine the quality of education I have received over my high school career. Because of McKinley I have an incredible amount of college credit, and have done well enough all around to enjoy a good-through-graduate-school full ride to the Ohio State University. And to boot, my Bulldog pride will never fade, and I will never be ashamed of my roots right there on 17th Street.
No, I wouldn’t rather go to any other school in the area. Because there is nothing wrong with Canton McKinley High School — past or present.
