AKRON: Akron City Council and the Akron School Board will hold a rare joint meeting today.
Russel Neal Jr., the Ward 4 councilman, suggested that the two government bodies, which have many shared interests, including jointly overseeing the mammoth school construction project, get together.
The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers on the third floor of City Hall, 166 S. High St.
Council President Garry Moneypenny asked council members to send items they’d like on the agenda to the clerk’s office. Among the items on the list include litter and trash on school grounds and consulting with council members and residents when deciding on tearing down schools and how the land should be used.
Some council members and school board members sit on the Joint Board of Review, which oversees the school construction project, but Moneypenny said he doesn’t think all of the council members and school board members have met.
Akron School Board President Jason Haas said he doesn’t know of any particular issues school board members want to discuss. He thinks the meeting will help establish better dialogue between the two bodies.
“It makes sense for us to talk about areas where we overlap,” he said.
