Akron police are investigating the city’s second fatal shooting in as many days.
Anthony Travis, 30, was shot late Wednesday night and died Thursday morning at Akron General Medical Center. An autopsy revealed he had gunshot wounds to the head and torso.
According to police, Travis was standing near a vehicle on Princeton Avenue just before midnight when he was shot. Detectives believe some sort of altercation took place just before the gunfire. A suspect has not been identified.
Efforts to reach Travis’ family were not successful.
His death comes a day after the fatal shooting of Kevin Collier, 37, a Canton resident who died Wednesday morning after being shot in the head while he stood in the doorway of a Brandon Street home late Tuesday night. Collier died the following morning. No suspect has been identified.
Akron police were seeking the public’s help in identifying his shooter.
Police said the gunman, wearing a mask and dark clothing, ran from the area and has not been apprehended.
Details of the shooting were scant. Police could not immediately say how many shots were fired. They received multiple 911 calls about 9:30 p.m.
Paramedics found Collier and drove him to Summa Akron City Hospital, where he later died of a gunshot wound to the head, an autopsy showed.
Authorities have not determined Collier’s connection to the home, which is at the end of Brandon Street and abutted by trees and brush. Several vehicles and children’s toys were outside the residence Wednesday morning, but knocks on the door went unanswered.
Collier’s father, Calvin Tucker, declined to comment when reached by phone.
There have been 18 homicides in Akron this year. In 2011, police investigated 26 homicide deaths. In 2010, the city had 22 homicides. There were 20 cases in 2009, 16 in 2008, 23 in 2007, 32 in 2006 and 27 in 2005.
