Last year’s inaugural 5K race and run/walk to benefit the Andrea Rose Teodosio Memorial Foundation drew so many participants, organizers needed a second order of event T-shirts.
An even bigger field of runners is expected this year.
The second annual Andrea Rose Teodosio 5K Race, 1-Mile Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run will be held July 14. The starting point is Lock 3 Park in downtown Akron.
Teodosio, whose parents are Summit County judges, died at age 22 from injuries suffered in a skiing accident in February 2011 at Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort in central West Virginia. The fundraising event, held in conjunction with the 65th annual Italian-American Festival, benefits the foundation in her name.
Common Pleas Judge Tom Teodosio said the foundation was established to keep alive the causes his daughter held in high regard: assisting the elderly and underprivileged, actively working on environmental issues and promoting community service and education.
Last year’s event drew about 800 runners, walkers and children, double the number of free, commemorative Andrea Rose T-shirts organizers had purchased, Teodosio said.
He said more shirts were ordered for the hundreds of additional participants and that foundation organizers delivered or mailed the shirts to everybody in the following days.
“It really was heartwarming to know that many people think so much of her and her memory. That’s been the most amazing thing to learn in her short life: how many people she touched,” Teodosio said.
Organizers are expecting about 1,000 participants for this year’s event, he said.
Andrea Teodosio was a 2010 graduate of John Carroll University. She worked as a research and strategy development assistant and member of the Green Team for Akron’s Hitchcock Fleming & Associates marketing communications firm.
Her mother is Summit County Juvenile Judge Linda Tucci Teodosio, who has served on the juvenile bench since 2003.
Anyone wishing to participate can preregister at the foundation website, www.andrearose.org, or by filling out the specially designed yellow application forms available at the Summit County Courthouse, 209 S. High St. in downtown Akron, and at area athletic stores specializing in running and walking equipment.
Cost is $20 in advance or $25 on race day. Check-in begins at 7 a.m. at Lock 3.
Special contributions to the foundation’s Be An Angel fund are $100 and include registration, a tech runner’s shirt and a $75 tax-deductible gift to the foundation, organizers said.
