Community

The Bath Township Historical Society was honored by the Ohio State Grange for its activities and programs marking the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Society President Jeff Andrew accepted the recognition. Other Summit County Grange members to receive awards were retired Bath Township fire Chief Jim Paulett, Ohio State Grange Service Award; Liz Lattimer, a Stow-Munroe Falls School District education aide and substitute bus driver, for her work with special-needs children; and Priscilla Allaman, who works for the Peninsula police, for her safety forces work.

Alan and Debbie Casanova of Akron were the October Star Volunteer award winners for Metro Parks, Serving Summit County. The couple was honored for an inventory of the memorial benches in the park district. The husband and wife became park volunteers in 1999.

Education

Robert Lord, a professor of psychology at the University of Akron, received the 2012 Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. The national award honors the investigator who has made significant contributions to the field.

Mary Verstraete, coordinator of the undergraduate program for biomedical engineering at the University of Akron, received the Outstanding Faculty Adviser Award from the Society of Women Engineers.

Five faculty members from the University of Mount Union received Excellence in Education Awards sponsored by Ohio Magazine: Beth Canfield-Simbro, associate professor of human performance and sports business and co-director of the honors program; Jamie Capuzza, professor of communications and director of the gender studies program; Sandra Ekstrand, associate professor of economics, accounting and business administration; Ronald Mendel, associate professor of human performance and sports business and director of Mount Union’s exercise science program; and Peter Schneller, professor of education.

Military

Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Dustin D. Moneypenny, son of Kathy M. Sandy of Akron, graduated from the Aerospace Maintenance Apprentice Course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas. He is a 2010 graduate of Springfield High School.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class James T. Catalano, son of Dianne L. and Danny A. Catalano of Akron, completed the Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit course at Ballston Spa, N.Y. He is a 2009 graduate of Green High School.
