Four Summit County sheriff’s deputies have been promoted to sergeant: Jeffrey A. Hemsley, Matamba Kaalima, Michael P. Lowe and Shawn S. Metcalf. Hemsley works at the Summit County Jail; Kaalima, the Glenwood Jail; Lowe, in patrol; and Metcalf, at the Summit County jail.

Jonathan Henn, a 15-year-old sophomore at Cloverleaf High School, became an Eagle Scout after building a wildlife observation blind at Cloverleaf Elementary School. He’s a member of Boy Scout Troop 454 in Westfield Center.

Two new members to the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby’s board of directors are Phillip Kane, vice president of commercial tire at Goodyear’s Tire & Rubber’s North American tire division, and Kevin Thomas, vice president of operations at AAA.

Education

John Roncone, an assistant professor at the University of Akron’s Wayne College, was named Health Professional of the Year for 2012 by the Ohio Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. He teaches health and wellness at the Orrville campus.

The eight Kent State employees who received 2012 President’s Excellence Awards, which includes a $1,000 bonus, are: Veronica Cook-Euell, supplier diversity program manager; Marcy Curtiss, secretary, computer science; Thomas Farmer, maintenance repair worker, Student Center; Dan Karp, executive director, creative services; Marlo Kibler, coordinator, university benefits; Bryan Molnar, electronic technician supervisor; Anissa Strickland, associate director, student financial aid; and Cheryl Tennant, academic program specialist, library and information sciences.

Two Akron-area educators received awards from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry. Cheri Goggin of Aurora, a teacher at Berkshire High School, was named outstanding educator. Lola Lewis of Massillon, a state regional urban forester, was named redwood outstanding facilitator.

Akron-area students who have received scholarships to attend Xavier University in Cincinnati are Madelyne John, daughter of Karen and Patrick John of Sagamore Hills, who will study the sciences, and Jessica Reker, daughter of Angela and Michael Reker of Streetsboro, environmental science.

Military

Seaman Recruit Amanda M. Mervine, a 2012 graduate of Ellet High School, graduated from boot camp at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

Marine Corps Lance Cpl. John P. Yeager, son of Emily F. and John D. Yeager of Akron, received a certification of commendation while serving with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 362, Marine Corps Base, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He is a 2002 graduate of Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Jalisa A. Gavin, daughter of Erica A. Harper of Akron, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. She is a 2010 graduate of Akron’s East High School.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Logan C. Peters, son of Stacy L. Mramor of Uniontown and Mark Peters of Ravenna, graduated from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2012 graduate of Lake High School.
