Bill Manby Jr. received the Presidential Citation and AZ Baker Service Award for leadership and community service from the Rotary Club of Akron. As president, Manby continued to support several community initiatives including the Akron Rotary Camp, increased attendance in meetings and of new members and helped sponsor a medical mission to India.
Winners of the second-annual Pinnacle Awards presented by the United Way of Summit County and Inside Business Magazine were: Laura B. Culp, partner with BCG & Co., recipient of the Lisle M. Buckingham Leadership Award; Russell M. Pry, Summit County executive, recipient of the John F. Seiberling, Jr. Award for Excellence in Elected Public Service; and Dr. Lauren Spalding, resident at Summa Akron City Hospital, recipient of the Andrea R. Teodosio Rising Star Award. The organizational honorees for 2013 were: the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., private sector large company; Fifth Third Bank, private sector mid-size company) State & Federal Communications, private sector small company; and Hattie Larlham, public sector nonprofit agency.
Akron resident Seth Yergin, a junior majoring in communication arts at Malone University, was a recent winner at the Cleveland 48-Hour Film Project. His Cyclical Productions received awards for best original score and directing and was runner-up for best film for the film, Hi.
Susan Day of Canton, received a scholarship through the American Association of Teachers of Japanese to study in Japan this school year. She is a student at the University of Findlay.
Matthew Waldsmith, a student at East High in Akron, was selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars because of academic achievement.
Heather Walter, an associate professor of communication at the University of Akron, was recognized as the Ohio Communication Association’s Distinguished Teacher Award recipient for 2013.
University of Akron alumna Ann Lane Gates has been selected to receive the Legacy, Leadership and Excellence Award from UA’s Office of Multicultural Development.
Gates began her career as a substitute teacher with the Akron Schools and progressed in several jobs to retire in 1999 as the community relations and legislative affairs officer.
The Rev. Charles Tyler Sr., pastor of Wesley Temple A.M.E. Zion Church in Akron, and Russel C. Holmes, a nonprofit financial consultant, both will receive distinguished alumni awards.
Air Force Airman Christopher D. Mourton, son of Suzanne and Gary Mourton of Akron, graduated from basic military training at the Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio. He is a 2011 graduate of Coventry High School.
Army Pvt. Chad Porter graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Tracy Porter of Akron and is a 2008 graduate of Brunswick High School.
Air Force Airman Charles E. Huggins, a 2010 graduate of Kenmore High in Akron, graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio. He is the son of Tony Huggins of Akron.
Bradley N. Mayhew, son of Jacqueline Wilson of Akron, was promoted to staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He is an air transportation specialist at the 437th Airlift Wing at Charleston Air Force Base, S.C. He graduated from Akron’s North High in 2008.
Navy Seaman Apprentice Shawn McDaniel, son of Michael and April McDaniel of Tallmadge, graduated from basic training at recruit training command at Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2013 graduate of Tallmadge High School.
