One year ago today, 51-year-old Michael Hance went on a 10-minute shooting spree in Copley Township that left eight people dead and his longtime girlfriend, Rebecca Dieter, seriously hurt.
Gudrun Johnson, 64, and Russell Johnson, 67, were killed in their driveway next door to Dieter’s home. The Johnsons’ granddaughter, Autumn, and her friend Amelia Shambaugh, both 16, were shot inside a minivan parked in the driveway.
Dieter’s brother Craig, 51, also was killed in the driveway.
Becky Dieter, 49, who had heard shots while in her house, went outside, where Hance shot her. She later told police she played dead to avoid being shot again and survived.
The Johnsons’ sons, Michael and Bryan, ran as Hance reloaded. Michael escaped; Bryan Johnson, 44, was shot in a nearby yard.
Craig Dieter’s son, Scott, 11, who only moments before was playing with a puppy, was chased to a neighbor’s home. Hance followed him inside and killed the boy in the basement.
When Hance refused to surrender upon leaving the house, police shot and killed him.
