Falls police dealing with Facebook scam

CUYAHOGA FALLS: A free gift from the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department might be more like a bad dream to Facebook users who click on the “offer.”

A notification urging users to “claim an offer from the City of Cuyahoga Falls Police Department” might be a way for hackers to access your email or Facebook accounts, authorities warn.

The notification appears on a user’s Facebook page, claiming a friend of the user just claimed an offer.

Included is a box where the user can click to claim the offer.

The box has a picture of a Falls police patch, with a place to click to receive the offer. The offer is emailed to the account attached to the user’s Facebook account.

When the user opens the email, he is directed to go to the Falls Police Department with a copy of the email to claim the offer.

Police Capt. Jack Davis said he heard about it when a man walked into the department with a copy of the ad and asked for his free offer.

The department might be busy for the next few days.

In the first two hours the phony notification was circulated, 700 Facebook users responded to the offer.
