Akron police released federal statistics Wednesday that suggest overall crime in the city dropped by more than 10 percent last year.
Offenses for major crimes tracked by the department also dropped, while overall offenses decreased by 12 percent from 2011 to 2012.
According to the city, homicides declined 11 percent, robberies decreased by 23 percent, burglaries fell 22 percent, sexual assaults were down 8 percent and aggravated assaults declined by 4 percent. Car thefts also declined by 12 percent.
The decrease continues an overall decline in reported crimes locally and nationally.
In 2010, violent crimes in Akron fell 13 percent and ended a streak of four consecutive annual increases, according to FBI figures.
In 2011, however, Akron saw a 5 percent spike in violent crime, bucking the nation’s five-year downward trend.
FBI stats showed Akron was one of the few cities where crime did not fall in 2011. That year, robberies jumped 19 percent and accounted for a large portion of the overall spike.
