Fire departments recover body of Akron boy from Mud Brook

Beacon Journal staff report

What officials believe to be the body of a 12-year-old autistic Akron boy was recovered on Sunday from Mud Brook.

The recovery of the body of Nicholas Shaffer came at 11:21 a.m., according to a short statement from the Akron Fire Department.

An autopsy is scheduled for today by the Summit County Medical Examiner.

Akron Fire Department Capt. Mark Oziomek thanked the efforts of the Akron and Cuyahoga Falls fire department water rescue teams and others that had searched three days for Shaffer, who was swept away on Thursday in Mud Brook creek in Akron’s Merriman Valley.

No further information was being released, the Akron Fire Department said.

Additional information will be released today in a follow-up statement, a spokesman said.

Nicholas, a student at Woodridge Intermediate School, fell or jumped into the normally calm stream that was raging with water from Thursday’s monster rainstorm.

He had been sitting with family and friends near the creek behind Timber Top apartments.

Three people who witnessed Nicholas going into the stream jumped into the creek in unsuccessful efforts to save the boy.

The creek is normally only about 1 foot deep. It empties into the Cuyahoga River west of Akron-Peninsula Road.

WKYC-TV (Channel 3) reported that the family had released a statement:

“We would like to thank the search and rescue crews and all of the communities that came together and worked so hard to find Nic. Being able to lay him to rest has brought us a certain amount of closure.

“We are also grateful to all of our friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who have kept Nic and our family in their thoughts and prayers. We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support we have received.

“While Nic could not speak, he always found ways to express his love for the people around him; he will be dearly missed.”
