GREEN: The city will celebrate its 20th anniversary along with the annual FreedomFest this weekend with family events, food, a beer garden, live music and fireworks.
The free event is from noon until 11 p.m. Saturday at Boettler Park, 5300 Massillon Road.
The fest will kick off at 6 p.m. Friday with a family fun run at Boettler and Southgate Parks.
Activities resume Saturday with inflatables, Indy-car racing, a virtual Pac-Man game and a nine-hole mini golf course, as well as other free events. Old-fashioned carnival games will be available for a small fee until 8 p.m.
County music band The Farm will perform from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Their song Home Sweet Home has been on the country music charts for the past 34 weeks.
Food vendors include Chick-fil-A, Stoddard’s Ice Cream and the Pierogi Lady. Regular festival fare also will be available, such as french fries, ice cream, funnel cakes, burgers, sausage sandwiches, gyros, barbecue beef sandwiches and more.
The event, sponsored by Summa Health System, will include a visit from the Children’s Hospital Air Bear helicopter from 5 to 7 p.m. Local artist Ron Beahn will sign posters of his painting of the Lichtenwalter Schoolhouse in commemoration of the city’s 20th anniversary. Posters will be available for $10.
Skydivers will provide entertainment, weather permitting.
Free parking will be available at Boettler Park and at various lots along International Parkway. Handicap parking will be available at Boettler Park.
