AKRON

Meth lab arrests

AKRON: Authorities searching for a fugitive Wednesday night say they discovered a methamphetamine lab inside an Akron home; one person arrested there is pregnant.

Arrested inside the Carey Avenue home on meth-related charges were Jeffrey Jones, 41, and Jacqueline Hahn, 24. Police said Hahn is nine months pregnant. She and Jones were being held in the Summit County Jail.

The Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force discovered the lab while visiting the Kenmore-area home, according to police.

A search of the residence by the Akron police Clandestine Lab Enforcement Team resulted in officers seizing chemicals and other items used to make the drug. Authorities say they also recovered marijuana and two shotguns.

Broadway closure

AKRON: Broadway from University Avenue to Bowery Street will be closed at 5 a.m. Saturday so that Summit County can remove a communications tower from its safety building.

The removal of the tower from the 53 University building is expected to take a day.

The tower is old, is no longer being used and is pulling on the roof, county officials said.

Motorists can take University to Main Street to Bowery Street to Broadway to get around the closed portion.

Teen arrested

AKRON: A 14-year-old Akron boy is accused of robbing a woman as she exited her car Wednesday.

The boy was being held in the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center on robbery charges.

Akron police say a 63-year-old Sharon Center Township woman had parked her car in the 200 block of Wildwood Avenue and was about to visit her rental property when she was confronted by the boy about 6 p.m.

The teen grabbed her purse and ran away as the woman fell to the ground.

Akron officers called to the neighborhood found the teen walking near West Exchange Street. They recovered the woman’s purse, cash and other items.

CUYAHOGA FALLS

Income tax help

CUYAHOGA FALLS: The city enhanced its Online Income Tax service, making it possible for residents with only W-2 income and no overpayment or refund due to submit their return electronically.

Residents can log onto www.cityofcf.com and click on “Income Tax” under the “eServices” menu. Enter the individual city file number located on the tax form or pressure seal letter mailed to the resident and the Social Security number.

After filling out other information, an online tool will perform the necessary calculations.

If the calculations show there is a balance due or an overpayment, the return must be printed and a paper copy sent to the city. If not, there is no need to mail in paperwork.

COPLEY TOWNSHIP

Grant requested

COPLEY TWP.: Municipalities often combine their purchasing power to save money on bulk purchases.

Copley Trustee Helen Humphrys, a proponent of municipal cooperation, said Wednesday that 10 municipalities in the county have endorsed a similar approach to acquiring information technology, the “Summit County Broadband Initiative.”

If another 10 municipalities sign on, that would cut Copley’s $750 filing cost in half. The outlay is for a $100,000 grant request through the Local Government Innovation Fund. The deadline is March 1.

The grant will be filed for the feasibility phase, which will include collecting data to identify broadband assets, gaps in services and expansion opportunities.

According to an outline accompanying the spending request trustees approved Wednesday, the initiative would be administered by a state Sourcing Office, which facilitates municipal bulk-buying power, and the Hosted Technology Exchange, “a managed technology cooperative,” partners in the initiative.

“Inter connectivity feasibility will begin in July. While we are optimistic that the LGIF grant application has substantial merit,” the outline said. “It should be noted that this initiative has substantial merits even without the grant.”
