Man shot by State Highway Patrol trooper

Beacon Journal staff report

A 24-year-old West Salem man was taken to Akron General Medical Center after being shot early Sunday morning by an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper.

The trooper and a Wooster police officer were investigating a suspicious vehicle in the 1300 block of Smithville-Western Road, about one-half mile west of state Route 83, at 2:10 a.m.

As the officers approached the vehicle, the driver accelerated through the yard of a residence and began driving toward the officers, according to Wooster police.

The trooper fired at the vehicle and the driver, Stephen M. Thompson, 26, of Ashland attempted to flee from the vehicle and resisted arrest, according to authorities. He was taken to the Wayne County Justice Center.

The passenger, Ryan Michael Porter, who was shot, was taken to Wooster Community Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

He was later transferred to Akron General Medical Center.

The incident is under investigation.
