AKRON: City police were involved in a high-speed chase downtown late Saturday afternoon that reached speeds of at least 70 mph.
The motorist apparently crashed after police called off pursuit of the vehicle.
Police dispatchers refused to answer questions about the incident and a police spokesman didn’t return a phone call.
AKRON: The Akron chapter of the Audubon Society will celebrate its 80th anniversary Saturday.
The event will run from noon to 4 p.m. at the Seiberling Nature Realm, 1828 Smith Road.
Birds from the Medina Raptor Center in Spencer Township will be on exhibit during the celebration that is being co-hosted by Summit Metro Parks.
There will be children’s crafts and displays, plus a naturalist-guided walk at 2 p.m.
Autism 5K and walk
AKRON: The Austism Society of Greater Akron is hosting an annual 5K race and family fun walk at 9 a.m. June 14 at Lock 3 in downtown Akron.
Registration is $30 for the 5K. After June 11, the fee is $35.
There is no fee for the family fun walk.

BATH TWP.: Helen Welch will appear at Crown Point Ecology Center, 3220 Ira Road, June 7 for a special performance of Beatles in the Barn.
During this 50th anniversary year of the Beatles’ rise to fame, Welch and fellow musicians will revisit the band’s familiar melodies with a blend of pop jazz.
Guests can picnic on the grounds of Crown Point starting at 5 p.m.; wine is permitted.
The show will begin at 7 p.m. with dessert and coffee at intermission.
Tickets for this Broadway in the Barn fundraiser are $35 and must be purchased in advance.
All tickets are general admission with seating inside the barn.

Trip to Costa Rica
SUGAR CREEK TWP.: The Wilderness Center is sponsoring a birding eco-tour to Costa Rica next year.
The trip, from Jan. 5-15, includes several national parks in the Central American country.
The cost with eight to 12 travelers will be $2,675 (double occupancy).
Airfare will be an additional $760 a person from Akron-Canton Airport. The single supplement is $800.
Alcohol, phone service, laundry and gratuities will be extra.

CANTON: Six branches of the Stark County District Library are hosting a photo contest as part of the Summer Reading Challenge.
Color or black and white photos may be submitted during regular library hours from June 9 to Aug. 2.
Amateur photographers of any age may submit up to two photographs at the following locations: DeHoff Memorial Branch, Jackson Township Branch, Main Library, Madge Youtz Branch and North Branch.
Lake Community Branch will host a separate photo contest in conjunction with the Quail Hollow State Park Camera Club.
It is open to amateur photographers ages 8 to adult, and in that contest, entrants may submit up to five images.
