You don’t have to be able to run a marathon to be in the Akron Marathon.
The marathon hosts the nation’s fourth-largest relay event, with five-member teams running between 2.8 and 7.9 miles each.
“If you have run two miles in the last month, you can participate in the relay event,” Executive Director Anne Bitong said.
If you’re interested, hurry. The deadline to register is midnight Sunday.
There is room for 1,200 teams, and more than 1,100 have signed up. Create your own team at www.akronmarathon.org or find a team to join by using the “Team Maker” tool on the marathon’s website.
Race Director Jim Barnett said participants don’t even need to be fast.
“We have many participants who walk their portion of the race,” he said.
The Akron Marathon starts at 7 a.m. Sept. 24, and relay teams run at the same time and over the same course as marathon participants.
The day also features a special Kids Fun Run for youths 14 years and younger. It’s free, and you can register the morning of the event. Participants get a T-shirt, medallion and goodie bag.
The kids run starts at 9 a.m. at Spaghetti Warehouse, 510 S. Main St., and finishes at Lock 3 park one mile away.
Once there, you can enjoy a $5 pancake breakfast from the Downtown Akron Kiwanis Club. Then mosey over to Canal Park, where there will be free admission to see runners crossing their own finishing line in center field.
Race day registration for the fun run begins at 7:45 a.m.
