A special retirement service for the Rev. Karen Hartley is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Wedgewood United Methodist Church, 2350 Wedgewood Drive, Akron.
In her retirement, Hartley and her husband, Tom, plan to travel the country in their motor home, doing mission work with the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Tom Hartley is also retiring as a professor of engineering at the University of Akron.
During Hartley’s 21-year tenure as pastor of the Ellet neighborhood congregation, worship attendance has double to 220; a contemporary service was started and the church building was doubled in size to include a large gathering space, a prayer chapel and gymnasium, which is used for community outreach.
Under Hartley’s leadership, the congregation has extended its mission arm to host homeless families and participate in local mission work in the Sawyerwood, Opportunity Park and Goodyear Heights neighborhoods. It has also added Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops and committed its youth to annual mission work in Tennessee.
A potluck lunch and farewell reception for the Hartleys will begin after the service.
