Magical Theatre Company’s third annual In Pursuit of Fun: Purse Swap, drew more than 100 women and girls to St. Sebastian’s Zwisler Hall in Akron on Tuesday evening.
Holly Barkdoll, co-producing director at the theater, credited costumer George McCarty II with the idea for the swap. “I had a friend who bought lots of purses, and she would put the extras on the kitchen table and invite everyone to swap,” McCarty said at the party.
Cathy Nahacky greeted guests who sipped wine and punch as they checked out tables full of purses. Sheila Wade, Vicki Heiselman, Sharon Holbrook and Kristen McCarty spotted favorites, while Joanna Caley, Amy Hecky, Deb Lemire and her daughter Rachel Kunz looked over the mystery purses on the steps of the stage. Abbey Van Auken, Maci Woyat and Hayley Hineline volunteered to be runners for anyone physically unable to make the swap run.
Sandy VanAuken and Robert Keith sold raffle tickets for the mystery purses, which contained prizes such as Indians tickets, restaurant gift cards and tickets to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Keith insisted the decorative purse where he deposited raffle tickets was actually a “man bag.”
Tubbs Chiropractic provided chair and neck messages. Michele Ellis and Mary Lynn Lopez sampled cream puffs from the centerpiece as they enjoyed the event with Kerry Boscarello, Christie Needham and her daughter, Helen.
Rose Bakita brought along her soft sculpture doll, Kenny, for luck as she enjoyed the party with her daughter, Karen, and Bo Arnold, Sue Cianciola, Tammy Gonsiewski, Sharon Smith and Sandy Mills. Norma Shaffer brought her granddaughters, Sydney Ronca, Haley Herman, Jordan Jones and her daughter, Kathy Ronca.
The ladies removed shoes and jewelry, rolled up pant legs and got ready to make the swap run. Co-producing director Dennis O’Connell gave the signal and the run was on. Afterward, volunteers Susan Rose and Kathy Morganstern maintained order as the swapping continued.
O’Connell conducted the raffle, where 9-year-old Helen Needham was delighted to win a Macy’s gift certificate, Ellis won a Tubbs Chiropractic gift basket, and Alma Houston won the grand prize: a week at a villa in Bonita Springs, Fla.
Barkdoll said the Magical Theatre’s next production, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, will open May 3. For tickets, call 330-848-3708.
