Sunday will be the first anniversary of the death of local radio star Howie Chizek, and his station, WNIR (100.1-FM) will mark the occasion in a couple of ways.
At about 7:10 p.m. Sunday, during Bob Earley’s show, the station will air a 66-minute broadcast from Chizek’s show on June 14, 2012, his next-to-last time on the station. The station did not have access to his last show, station manager Bill Klaus said, and had only part of the June 14 program. In addition, the replay edited out the news breaks. It left in the live commercials, but there will be no new commercials during the airing. Following the replay, Earley will invite listeners to reminisce about Chizek.
On Monday, the station will replay clips from that 2012 show throughout the day as well as letting listeners discuss Chizek. The station will also have a moment of silence in Chizek’s memory at about 12:20 p.m.
Chizek, a WNIR mainstay for close to 40 years, died of a heart attack while traveling to Florida with participants in his New Adventures youth program.
